Hyderabad: The Tata group has decided to make Hyderabad a hub for its defence and aerospace investments, chairman Ratan Tata said.

Tata was in Hyderabad on Sunday to unveil the first helicopter cabin made in India by Tata Advanced Systems Ltd for US-based Sikorsky Aircraft Corp., the world’s biggest maker of helicopters. The cabin will be used in Sikorsky’s S-92 model helicopter.

Sikorsky is part of United Technologies Corp., a group that also produces aircraft engines, elevators and fire and security equipment.

Tata Advanced Systems, a unit of Tata Sons Ltd, invested nearly Rs. 1,000 crore to set up the helicopter cabin manufacturing facility at an aerospace and precision engineering special economic zone at Adibatla on the outskirts of Hyderabad.

Defence and strategic sectors are likely to emerge as larger new areas for the Tata group as the private sector enters these sectors, Tata said. “The Tata group has decided that all its aerospace and defence—the new area of Tata group—investments will be centred at Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh,” he added. He did not elaborate on the planned investments.

Tata had earlier entered into a joint venture agreement with the Italian defence and aerospace manufacturer AgustaWestland to assemble AW119 helicopters at Hyderabad.

Nova Integrated Systems Ltd, a venture of Israel Aerospace Industries Ltd (IAI), a developer of military and commercial aerospace technology, and Tata Advanced Systems had approached Andhra Pradesh government in June, showing interest in setting up a defence equipment manufacturing facility.

The venture plans to develop, manufacture and support a wide range of defence and aerospace products, including missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles, electronic warfare and homeland security systems. IAI had announced plans to invest $50 million in Nova to own 26% of the venture, while Tatas would own 74%.

Sam Bob, principal secretary in Andhra Pradesh chief minister’s office, said the group was keen on Hyderabad for defence and aerospace equipment activities since the city provides an ecosystem for the sector. Several defence equipment and component manufacturers are active around the city.

Tata Aerospace SEZ in Adibhatla Prepares to Export First Helicopter Cabin. Mahindra Plans New Unit

The first helicopter cabin manufactured by Tata Advanced Systems in the Aerospace SEZ in Ranga Reddy district will be delivered next week.

Tatas had set up a helicopter manufacturing facility at the aerospace SEZ to manufacture cabins for the Sikorsky-92 helicopters which would be exported to the Sikorskys assembly unit in the US on November 23 with two more scheduled to be delivered by the year-end.

According to the chief ministers office,Tata group chairman Ratan Tata would be meeting the chief minister K Rosaiah on November 7 to discuss further investments planned by the group in the state.

Meanwhile,automobile giant Mahindra also proposes to set up yet another aerospace project at the aerospace SEZ.

The functioning and progress of the countrys first Aerospace and Precision Engineering Special Economic Zone set up on a 500-acre site at Nadargul and Adibhatla villages in Ranga Reddy district was reviewed by the chief minister on Sunday.

The CM said that with a little more emphasis,the state could overtake Gujarat and Maharashtra in terms of investment and industrialisation in the near future.

Maybe HAL/NAL should also enter into a similar agreement with TATA Advance Systems.
This would reduce the load over HAL/NAL factories and also speed up the production of defence materials.

Hyderabad: Hyderabad is poised to become a blip on the world’s defence map soon when the Tata Advanced Systems unit will start rolling out spare parts for the C-130J, the special operations aircraft made by the US that is presently in service in 15 countries. The Hyderabad factory will become operational over the next year now that Tata Advanced Systems has entered into a joint venture with Lockheed Martin. The US aerospace major has supplied six C-130J Super Hercules aircraft to the Indian Air Force (IAF) the contract for which mandates Lockheed to invest 30 per cent of the deal within the country.

“The factory will manufacture replacement centre wing boxes and tail sections for every new C-130 J sold around the world. Beginning August, all C-130Js sold to any country will be built in Hyderabad,” Lockheed Martin’s India head Roger M Rose told Express. Designed for special operations, the four-engine C-130J can land troops behind enemy lines. Capable of operating from a short runway, it can also operate in pitch dark conditions.

Tata Advanced Systems holds 74 per cent of the stake in the joint venture (JV), and Lockheed 26 per cent--the foreign direct investment (FDI) limit allowed in defence sector. Tata Advanced Systems is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tata Sons with focus on providing integrated solutions for aerospace, defence, homeland security and disaster management.

“This is our first JV in India and it will strengthen our foothold in the Indian defence market,” said Roger, beaming about the fact that his company delivered six C-130J Super Hercules aircraft to IAF well before deadline. The IAF had signed the $1 billion deal for the six aircraft in 2008.

If Indian navy select sikorsky s-70B and for N-MRH MH-60R helicopters it will give a major boast to Tata. As some this helicopters can also assembled here as they have JV with sikorsky.
