WASHINGTON: Pakistan’s former ambassador to the United States, Husain Haqqani, said on Tuesday that officials in Islamabad should take responsibility for their failed policies instead of looking for scapegoats.

Rejecting the claims made by Advisor to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz that a former Pakistani ambassador to the United States (US) is ‘lobbying against his own country’ and ‘creating hurdles for the government,’ Haqqani said he knew Aziz was speaking about him because another minister had attacked him by name with similar claims.

“I am now a scholar in the US, not a lobbyist,” Haqqani said, adding, “If my opinions as a scholar carry so much weight that US policy is being affected by them then the Pakistan Foreign Ministry should try to influence my opinions rather than treating me like a pariah and making false allegations against me in the Pakistani media.”

“I have written three scholarly books on Pakistan published internationally criticizing policies that I believe damage Pakistan’s interests,” Haqqani said.

“Others, including Mr Sartaj Aziz, are welcome to write books that disprove my arguments but to say that my opinions are creating hurdles in the conduct of their failed policies is disingenuous at best.”

Haqqani said he was not engaged in lobbying and would never lobby against what “I consider to be the interest of Pakistan.” He however insisted that he is entitled to having a different opinion about what is Pakistan’s interest than the entrenched Pakistani establishment and if that troubles some people, so be it.

Haqqani advised the advisor incharge of the Pakistan Foreign Office to understand that making noise in Islamabad about a scholar in Washington would not change things in Washington.

“I have great respect for Mr Sartaj Aziz as a development economist and would like him to extend the same courtesy to me as a Professor of International Relations,” he added.

If Pakistan believes in these allegations then at least file an FIR and start some legal proceedings. It's the bare minimum that Pakistan can do to show to the world that rule of law exist in your Country.

Otherwise, internationally no one will take for your claims seriously

.
This idiot did nothing to circumvent America encircling and gave visas to any where from thousand cia agents to come to Pakistan unrecorded. He has done nothing-zero for Pakistan's interests and only a traitor like Zardari could have him as ambassador to US where a tough talking man was needed. Not once has he mentioned the unfair presler amendment and it was during his time the US-India nuke deal was signed. He has done nothing for Pakistan and is a traitor of the highest order.

An FIR is a start, but precisely on what grounds? What crime is to be alleged?

as per online info :

"He was appointed as Pakistan's ambassador in April 2008, but his tenure ended after the Memogate incident, when the claim was made that he had been insufficiently protective of Pakistan's interests. A judicial commission was set up by the Supreme Court of Pakistan to probe the allegations against him. According to commission's report which was issued in June 2012, Haqqani was declared guilty of authoring a memo which called for direct US intervention into Pakistan, though Pakistan's Supreme Court noted that the commission was only expressing an opinion"

When the Judicial commission has found him guilty then file an FIR , probe the matter, either clear his name or hang him. Show Rule of law exist .

And that is the problem Mr. Haqqani. Your defination of Pakistani interests is way different than anything acceptable to Pakistani state or people for that matter.

So the Supreme Court decided not to prosecute him by calling the commission's report a mere opinion and not violation of law. That alone speaks for itself quite well.

. . .
My opinion does not matter here. The law does. Let due process take place if there has been any crime committed.

That is what precisely I want to say, Pakistan is sending a wrong signal by criticising an ex-ambassador.

Pakistan should prosecute the guy and demand extradition OR

If the guy is very powerful lobbyist with America then woo him back and put him on Pakistan's pay roll

A Foreign affair Advisor of the stature of Sartaz Aziz should not demean himself by openly naming an insignificant ex-diplomat

Pakistan has its own unique way of implementing its policies. Obviously. It has the right to do so.
