Actually, Romania was the last Balkan country to fall into Ottoman Empire.
It was a backbone of Russian Empire growing into warm sea (look at Russo-Ottoman war at 1878).
It wasnt neither invaded by Soviet Union becouse G.G Dej, declared Socialist Romanian state and made Romania Soviet ally. Maybe @flamer84 can point some mistakes, but I think that I hit the target.

So, Romania wasnt, is not, and will never be some "shadow" just a typical European country with good rationalize nature to protect its interests. Alot of third world countries dont evoluated into that level of statehood.
