Hungary Puts Russian-Made Fighter Jets Up for Sale

If you ever dreamt about owning your own fighter jet, here’s your chance. Hungary’s defense ministry is selling off eight of its MIG-29 planes.

Hungary’s government has decided that it would part with the 24 planes to raise cash after they were retired from active duty.

The deadline for bids for the first stage of the sales involving eight planes and 20 thrusters is Sept. 15. The jets will be sold off in a one-round public tender to be concluded in October.

The MIG jets were designed by Soviet Union-based airplane factory Mikoyan and entered service in 1983. They’re widely used short-range fighters, originally developed to counter advanced models in the U.S. Air Force, such as F-15 or F-16. Mikoyan has since been merged into JSC United Aircraft Corporation, publicly traded in Russia, with the government retaining a majority stake.

Hungary received 28 MIG-29s in 1993 as debt compensation from Russia. The planes soon became local pilots’ favorites due to excellent maneuverability, which allowed the likes of Peter Kovacs, Gyula Vari and Zoltan Szabo to win world championship titles for flying them.

However, there were also downsides. MIGs are well-known for their high maintenance costs and high fuel consumption. Some planes in the fleet actually had to be salvaged in order to get spare parts to repair the others.

Also, when Hungary became a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO in 1999, it became apparent that there would be compatibility issues. Instead of trying to prolong the MIGs’ lifespan and upgrading their systems, the government decided to replace them with Gripens manufactured by Sweden’s Saab.

If you can fork out at least 3.46 billion forints ($18.3 million), the minimum amount the ministry would accept for the package, you’re good to try. The deals are subject to the manufacturer’s approval.

someone who can explain to me what this means?

Pakista used to deal with China & US so in my point of view Pakistan should start to evaluate these fighters for future political and strategic planning with Russian federation.

these are old and not even front line fighters in IAF . su-30 was impotent and we got hand on it already .we can not buy any jet for training and tests .and BTW Russian federation is not interested much in Pakistani deals and Pakistan also don't like to go russia for arms much .look what Russia done with its major partners .
BTW china has one working mig-29 if we are interested in training and test send pilots there .

That MiG was studied a long time ago (sometime during the 80's). If you want to 'study' them, then buy one from the Hungarians  That's what the Israelis and Americans did.

Rest of what you say is correct...

Do you want to - do not. Love - not love. All is decided by money and politics.
1. There is an unspoken gentlemen's agreement (between India and Russia). Russia is not supplying weapons to Pakistan instead of Russian weapons have priority in purchasing the Indian Army (which compensates for the Russian financial losses).
This is primarily due to the volume of the market.
2. Historically, Pakistan has been on the U.S. side in the Cold War.

Now situation is somewhat different. Russia and Pakistan are not enemies. An example of our relationship can serve as South Korea, Malaysia and Thailand. We may well establish trade relations. With arms like I said above a little different situation. The output of all the SCO can serve.
1. This could be a single internal market of arms and ammunition (not dependent on external factors embargo, etc.).
2. Will create a collective security system in the region (a kind of super NATO).
Example, Iran or Syria. Who would dare to inflict on them bombed when their backs are to stand united forces of Russia, China, India, Pakistan and so on. And the situation would be tantamount to the death of NATO.
I am not an idealist. Enough to read the comments on this forum to understand the relationship between Eurasian countries. However, we do not have to like each other. We never will be a direct analog NATA (with a single command and domination of one nation). Our only option would be (ideally).
1. In peacetime, the security sector. Every nation, individually or in a mini league with your neighbors provide security in the sector (with the help of the army).
2. If you experience any serious danger from outside the SCO countries are the single economic, political and military front.
This unit will focus on the common defense.

At the moment, NATO began as a substitute for the UN. We need a counterweight to the organization. In any case, the SCO will be safer for the planet. We have a lot of contradictions in order to begin the general aggression against anyone else. However, we may create a common defense organization and make it respected.

bangladesh yes its good idea for them .

no chance. BAF is waiting for J-10. As they are not available right now, BD is concentrating on ground air defence. don't see any new procurement before that. So 3-4 more years...
