The assassins belonged to the Hindu Mahasabha, not to the RSS. The RSS was never active in the freedom movement, but I understand, from anecdotal evidence, that it was very busy killing people in the UP and in Jammu during partition. They did not, however, kill Gandhi.

Rahul Gandhi's kind of broad-brush allegation is truly undesirable. On these matters, one needs to be laser-sharp on points of fact.

This may explain to some of you the implications of inaccuracy, and why I get obsessed about correctness of fact. @Tergon18 - take this as an apology for some recent negative reactions. I didn't mean to hurt, but I was, and am, bitterly hostile to badly-researched conclusions.

All the "intellectuals" who are saying RSS did not participate in freedom struggle are peddling half-Truths and they know it.

RSS was not formed as a competitor to INC to compete for struggle for independence. The aims and goals of RSS pre-independence was specific to Hindu movement and safety.
BUT
Leadership of RSS did participate in freedom movement even though they kept the Organization out of the politics of it. This simple fact is not shared by anyone.

It is as good as some one saying Nehru was not a patriot or did not work for independence as he was neither jailed or tortured but instead was seen always enjoying himself in company of memsaabs all the time.

The horrible twisting of history to suite ones agenda is sickening, probably the result of leftist education of India.

I repeat, RSS was not a political entity. It aims were different but leaders were never asked not to get involved in freedom movement as long as they kept RSS away from their activities.

That's another peddled lie.

RSS was not into politics at that time. In fact they got active in politics Long after Sardar's death.

Certain People have propagated the opinion that RSS was into politics and they were stopped after independence. That's not the truth.
They never were into politics until Jan Sangh.
