Huawei Technologies says it has a good chance to be a supplier of 5G equipment to Vietnamese service providers.

Fine Fan, CEO of Huawei Vietnam, said that the Chinese company is in talks with Vietnamese partners on conducting 5G trials later this year.

"We are confident of expanding in Vietnam," Fan told the Nikkei Asian Review, adding that Vietnamese Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Manh Hung "is open to every provider."

Fan said that Huawei cannot be beaten on quality or cost in Vietnam. "Huawei will provide better technology and solutions, along with financial support to local operators to deploy 5G."

Huawei’s expression of confidence comes as major mobile carriers in Vietnam have previously announced plans to develop 5G networks using equipment from other suppliers, including Ericsson, Nokia and Samsung Electronics.

Viettel, the country’s largest telecommunications company, became the first firm to receive permission to trial 5G services last month.

The company has earmarked $40 million for the development of its own 5G chipset, but was also considering using technology from Ericsson and Nokia, its president and CEO Le Dang Dung had told Reuters.

Last November, Minister Hung said at a conference that Vietnam should test 5G in 2019 and ensure nationwide coverage by 2020.

"Vietnam should be one of the first to launch the network, at least in Hanoi and HCMC," Hung said. The country had been one of the last in Southeast Asia to roll out 4G services.

Huawei has been the largest provider of 2G and 3G network equipment in Vietnam, though the company lost its lead when 4G arrived, CEO Fan said.

Vietnam's telecom market was estimated at more than $16 billion in 2016, with the three state-owned providers, Viettel, MobiFone, and VNPT, accounting for 95 percent of the market, according to the Nikkei.

5G is said to offer speeds 100 times faster than 4G, primarily used for smartphones and other similar devices. 5G is also expected to support new applications like remote medical procedures and autonomous driving.

Viettel ready to pilot 5G services next year

Viettel Group has announced it is ready to trial 5G services next year and will launch them immediately after the Ministry of Information and Communications allots it the frequency. Tào Đức Thắng, deputy general director of the military-owned company, tells Việt Nam News about the preparations.

Việt Nam expects to pilot 5G technology in 2019. How does Viettel prepare for this?

We would like to become the first network to offer 5G services and we readied infrastructure like fibre-optic cable and base transceiver stations (BTSs) a long time ago. Viettel has the advantage of having a nation-wide fibre-optic cable network, even in remote and mountainous areas.

We hope to get information about the frequency as soon as possible for us and other network providers to ensure proper design and equipment for 5G services in line with the Ministry of Information and Communication’s technical standards.

We have already tied up with our suppliers to research and manufacture 5G equipment, including 5G BTSs and core system to support 5G technology, and end-user equipment.

For example, if we have 3G end-user equipment, we cannot use it for 4G. If we would like to have a complete network, we need end-user equipment, 5G transceiver devices, network, and connection between transceiver stations and switchboard.

What spectrum does Viettel expect to be allotted?

When Viettel deployed 4G services, we refarmed the 2G frequency of 1,800MHz. However, refarming is not enough to meet the rising demand. When the network has high speed, the bandwidth must have wide frequency.

Basically, we don’t have specialised frequency for 4G and we have to exploit 2G frequency.

I hope in the coming time the Ministry of Information and Communication will announce plans for 4G spectrum auction to enterprises.

Globally, the frequency for 5G is 2,300MHz, even 2,600MHz or 3,500MHz. The 5G frequency is much wider than 4G and I know the ministry is actively preparing for 5G services.

What do you think about the potential and opportunities of 5G technologies?

It is expected that in 2019 or 2020 several countries like Japan and China will introduce 5G technology. It means Việt Nam will be one of a few countries to soon have 5G services.

5G services are expected to create a revolution in terms of speed and stability for mobile devices. There will be no difference between wireless and fixed broadband and it will promote a wave of new technologies to resolve the challenge of how to connect at any time, anywhere and everything.

The benefits of 5G include the deployment of many technologies because of the availability of high-speed networks. It will resolve many limitations of the old technologies.

It also has interests in the internet of things (IoT), artificial intelligence, Big Data and smart cities.

The 5G trial period will only be one year and in 2020 it will be introduced. Do you think it is too short a time to prepare?

For 4G, Viettel set up 36,000 base transceiver stations in just six months. BTS installation will surely take time but the most important things are the fibre-optic cable system and location of BTSs.

Viettel already has the biggest telecom infrastructure, so the deployment will be quick.

For 5G, providers are ready with networks. The question is whether users are willing to use 5G and about the readiness of end-user equipment. When the market and end-user equipment are available, 5G deployment is very easy.

In 2015 Viettel set up a research group for 5G technology and we have mastered the software, core technology for 5G equipment, hardware design for high-frequency transmission and others.

Viettel can design and manufacture 4G BTSs and other important parts of the 3G/4G network, which it has set up in Việt Nam and 10 international markets. — VNS

My brother in law working for Viettel. Not in R&D position but long enough and high enough to know many things. During Tet, I asked him about this news. And he said the parts are being imported from Huawei.

Be frank to ourselves. We can say we've mastered the technology, but we cannot manufacture even a simplest part. Just assembly from components imported from China.

Western companies don't like forcing new technology to other nations so fast. Why is Huawei and other chini companies want to force new technology to other countries so quickly??

No one forces a nation or a telecom company to do anything, rather it is an attraction. They can opt to go with the latest technology or stay backward. At the end of the day, the companies that has the best the technology and services in the market win. It is just how market competition works.

HANOI: The Vietnamese government has awarded its first trial 5G licence to Viettel, the largest telecommunication company in the Southeast Asian nation, the Ministry of Information and Communications said on Wednesday.

The licence allows the military-run company to launch 5G services in two of Vietnam's largest cities - Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City - on a trial basis, the ministry said.

The company is not permitted to collect fees from its 5G users during the trial period, which will end on Jan 21, 2020, according to the statement.

The company had earmarked US$40 million (1.27 billion baht) for the development of its own 5G chipset, but was also considering using technology from Ericsson and Nokia, Viettel's president and chief executive officer Le Dang Dung told Reuters in an interview earlier this month.

The company, formally known as Viettel Group, has about 60 million subscribers in Vietnam and over 30 million users across 10 other countries - predominantly Asia and Africa.

When 4g first started, the US wasn't pimping every country to jump on the 4g bandwagon. Huawei is pimping the shit out of 5g.

I think a mobile operator will choose what it believe to be the best in all aspects. However, it would be better to use self-developed equipment rather than a foreign-made one.
Viettel, the largest mobile operator, is gradually developing some telecom parts for its own use. Hope to use Made-in-Vietnam products at the soonest time.
