China's Huawei Technologies Co Ltd announced on Thursday its consumer business sales made a record of over 52 billion U.S. dollars in 2018 on strong demands for its smartphones.

The firm said it also launched a core chip for 5G base stations.

Despite the intense scrutiny faced in Western countries, Huawei's consumer business revenue jumped about 50 percent last year, replacing its carrier business as its largest segment by sales, Richard Yu, the head of the consumer division said at a press conference in Beijing, according to Reuters.

Last month, Huawei said its total revenue increased to 109 billion U.S. dollars with 21 percent year-on-year growth, surpassing 100 billion U.S. dollars for the first time.

The world's biggest producer of telecommunication equipment also unveiled at the press conference its latest move on 5G by launching its first core chip named TIANGANG designed explicitly for the 5G base station, according to a press release on its website.

The company claimed the chip, which supports simplified 5G networks and large-scale 5G network deployment all over the world, has won 30 commercial 5G contracts and shipped over 25,000 5G base stations globally.

Huawei has been devoted to 5G technology, and has deployed 5G networks in more than ten countries and planned to enter 20 countries in next 12 months, Ken Hu, the company's deputy chairman and rotating chairman said at Davos on Tuesday, predicting the 5G smartphone will hit the market in June.

One significant advantage of communism is that it sees history dialectically. Hence, it is more flexible, allowing national conditions and specific requirements of the time and changing technologies to make the required changes in the ideology.

This is quite different from Western fundamentalist neoliberalism, which sees history as linear, deterministic. They see an end in history, hence, their ideology is rigid and inflexible. This is why the US regime ideology generates strong contrary sentiments in many developing or underdeveloped countries.

Chinese ideology has a lot to teach the world and developing countries.
It's not just about communism.

HUAWEI CONFIRMS FOLDABLE PHONE WITH 5G ANNOUNCEMENT AT MWC 2019

By Marco Lancaster -

January 24, 2019

The race for 5G technology and the foldable phone is set to start on the next month. Now Huawei, the world’s second-largest smartphone vendor, confirmed its plans of releasing a foldable smartphone packed with 5G at MWC 2019.

This confirmation comes straight from the company’s Consumer Business Group CEO Richard Yu, so that’s not mere speculation but a real deal for now. Huawei is keen that the demonstration of its new compelling technology will steal some of the MWC 2019 attention for the Samsung’s S10 trio. Also, the Chinese Behemoth wants to prove its progress in the foldable smartphone segment in the front of a large audience.

Huawei’s 5G Foldable smartphone could be commercialized as soon as April, the super fast connectivity should be powered by the company’s own Balong 5000 modem. Still, there’s no confirmation of how many units the Chinese firm will sell during this initial release. When it comes to Samsung, the Korean company will be selling one million units of the Galaxy Fold, that amount may not be a lot, but given the complexity of manufacture, it’s an impressive amount.

According to researchers and market analyst, Huawei should consolidate its second place in global vendor rankings this year, the Chinese company will take this as the first achievement on the race for the smartphone market domination. According to Richard Yu, the company will be number one in the world “at the earliest this year, and next year at the latest.” He says that despite the pressure being made by “politic guys”, customers are still confident on Huawei smartphones.

Xiaomi Presents Foldable Smartphone Design

Posted Today

The China-based consumer electronics company Xiaomi has recently thrown its hat into the ring of foldable smartphones, presenting a device which – in contrast to its competitors – uses a tri-fold design.

In regular condition, the phone is reminiscent of a medium-sized tablet that can be easily turned into landscape mode by folding its two outer “wings” behind, which then automatically turn off, leaving only the middle of the screen active.

The benefits of having several fold points, rather than just one, will depend on the type of user interface the company will end up adopting for the new device.

Even though no further technical details have been made available, tech industry experts speculate that we are likely to learn quite a bit more during the upcoming Mobile World Congress 2019, which Xiaomi is set to attend.

Based on responses on Twitter, users are mostly positive about the new product (some even offering money up front), which doesn’t yet even have a name – a problem that company president Lin Bin decided to address by asking for suggestions online.

According to Weibo, a video presenting an engineering prototype of the new design, which was published on Wednesday, has already been played 3.5 million times and attracted thousands of comments.

Despite early popularity online, however, some experts are dubious about the phone’s eventual success on the market.

“Although a magnet for gadget lovers, the folding phone’s inevitable high cost and its trade-offs in usability will result in limited shipments. Problems are likely to include poor readability in sunlight, a bulky design to protect the screen’s fold and the need for an external screen,” speculated Ben Wood, Chief of Research at CCS Insight.

Polarising opinions aside, all we can do for now is simply wait and see, with a good chunk of info likely to drop at the above-mentioned event scheduled to take place at the end of February 2019.

Xiaomi’s folding phone is the best we’ve seen so far

A prototype phone that folds in three

By Tom Warren@tomwarren Jan 23, 2019, 4:18am ESTSHARE

Xiaomi’s folding phone has been revealed in a teaser video from the company. Xiaomi co-founder and president Lin Bin has posted a nearly minute-long video to Weibo today, detailing the double folding phone. Both sides of the device can be folded backwards to transform it from a tablet form factor into more of a compact phone. Unlike other foldable phones we’ve seen recently, this certainly looks a more practical use for the technology.

Xiaomi doesn’t provide many details about its foldable phone, but Bin reveals the device in the video is simply an engineering model. Bin does note Xiaomi has conquered “a series of technical problems such as flexible folding screen technology, four-wheel drive folding shaft technology, flexible cover technology, and MIUI adaptation.” Xiaomi appears to have adapted its MIUI software for the foldable phone, and a video is seen playing on the device before it converts from tablet to phone mode.

Xiaomi’s folding phone leaked earlier this month, and it’s set to compete against devices like Samsung’s folding phone prototype and Chinese company Royole’s folding device. Huawei is also reportedly planning to launch a foldable device, and Lenovo has previously teasedthat it was working on bendable phones. Xiaomi hasn’t revealed when we’ll learn more details about its foldable phone, but given Mobile World Congress starts in a month we’re likely to hear a lot more about foldable devices very soon.

Huawei launches the world's first single-chip multi-mode modem

With a small form factor and high degree of integration, Balong 5000 supports 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G on a single chip. It effectively reduces latency and power consumption when exchanging data between different modes, and will significantly enhance user experience in the early stages of commercial 5G deployment. Balong 5000 marks a significant step forward for the Balong series of chipsets.

Balong 5000 is the first chipset to perform to industry benchmarks for peak 5G download speeds. At Sub-6 GHz (low-frequency bands, the main spectrum used for 5G), Balong 5000 can achieve download speeds up to 4.6 Gbps. On mmWave spectrum (high-frequency bands used as extended spectrum for 5G), Balong 5000 can achieve download speeds up to 6.5 Gbps – 10 times faster than top 4G LTE speeds on the market today.

Balong 5000 is also the world's first chipset that supports both standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) network architectures for 5G. With non-standalone, 5G network architecture is built on top of legacy 4G LTE networks, whereas standalone 5G, as the name implies, will have its own independent architecture. Balong 5000 can flexibly meet different user and carrier requirements for connecting devices throughout different stages of 5G development.

Balong 5000 is the world's first multi-mode chipset that supports Vehicle to Everything (V2X) communications, providing low-latency and highly reliable solutions for connected vehicles. Huawei's 5G smartphones powered by Balong 5000 will be released at this year's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Powered by Balong 5000, the Huawei 5G CPE Pro supports both 4G and 5G wireless connections. On a 5G network, a 1-GB HD video clip can be downloaded within three seconds, and 8K video can be streamed smoothly without lag. This sets a new benchmark for home CPEs. In addition to homes, the Huawei 5G CPE Pro can also be used by small and medium-sized enterprises for super-fast broadband access.

Adopting new Wi-Fi 6 technology, the Huawei 5G CPE Pro delivers speeds of up to 4.8 Gbps. It is the first 5G CPE that supports HUAWEI HiLink protocols, bringing smart homes into the 5G era.

As a 5G pioneer, Huawei began research and development in 5G as early as 2009, and is currently the industry's only vendor that can provide end-to-end 5G systems. Huawei has more than 5700 engineers dedicated to 5G R&D, including over 500 5G experts. In total, Huawei has established 11 joint innovation centers for 5G solutions worldwide.
