Children of one God
Sir: Hanging in our living-room here in Alabama are two originally titled and signed Raj-era etchings of Lahore scenes: A Kashmiri Beggar, Lahore and A Persian Wheel, Lahore, both by one of the three artists first commissioned by the British to archive India through their elaborate etchings. The water wheel scene pictures a simple grassroots peasant whose young son is tending to two oxen who are turning the water wheel. The Kashmiri beggar etching depicts a very old bearded man seeking alms in a Lahore gate.
These and other Scallon etchings I own create a permanent signature in our home reflecting on my 1963-1965 US Air Force Liaison (USAF) young officer assignment in Pakistan with the old US Embassy in Karachi as the USAF Liaison Officer for the former US Base at Badaber, near Peshawar. I travelled all of then West Pakistan to include side trips to Lahore numerous times both on official business and as a tourist. What these etchings remind me of when I see them daily in our home is that the people of todays Pakistan and India and us here in the US are all the children of the same God, made in His image.
While extremist terrorists attempt to divide us who are all factually in Judaeo-Christian Holy Bible teachings and in Islamic terms, the people of your Holy Book it is important to never forget that we are not divisible in the eyes of and in the love which God Himself shows to us all who worship Him in our different ways. We are all the children of Abraham and children of the same God.
