Lick a lemon whenever u start craving for a cigarette. Trust me u wont light a cigarette. And even if u do, its going to leave a yucky taste in your mouth. Learnt the lesson the hard way....

I just stopped buying cigs, it worked for me. You can't smoke if you don't have it with you. I had to struggle for a few weeks initially but after that I was able to get over it it fully. Now I occasionally smoke especially when I am drinking or at a party but it's not a habit anymore. I smoked regularly( 4-5 cigs daily) for about 2 years from the age of 21 to 23.
 
I guess everybody's got their own individual style of "smoking cessation"!

many smokers who tried these have ended up in habit of chewing these nicotine gums more often, so its better to prepare mentally and stop smoking. Although i am unable to leave till now ;)

Yes, I did the same thing. Just stop buying the cigarettes.

I tried keeping some with me and just "willing" myself not to smoke them, but it didn't work. You can't have any cigarettes at all, not even "backup" cigarettes, otherwise you will smoke them.

Then again, like you I was only a light smoker. For a heavy chain-smoker I have no idea if this will work or not.
