How to prevent FLOODS disasters (for Pakistan)

.
Seems like a nice plan but here is the question - who will pay for it & who will cut the red tape ?

They will spend our money but it would be called - Shaheed Benazir bhutoo flood management scheme

While i do not want to discourage creative solutions to the problem

This is not a problem that a storm drainage system can cope with, storm systems move local over flow to rivers and lakes but when the river in question is over flowed in some places to 28ks wide there is no where to drain to.

The system mentioned above is not drainage for storm waters rather its the normal guttering system, it can take away only rain water from the streets, that's it!!!

A drainage system with a capacity to drain away such a deadly flood is next to impossible.

The best option can be to make additional canals along the cities or adjacent to the rivers which should connect to a nation wide canal network which will eventually either divert the water to reservoirs, other rivers with low water levels or to the ocean.

In short im talking about a parallel dry river system along with the rivers which would take excess amount of water to the sea.

But making such a network isn't feasible financially.

Sorry didn't want to dis-heart the thread starter however this is not a solution of our problems. If you have a glass of water spilling on the floor you may store the water in your pot or Jug. But if you have a river of water spilling over the cities..... such designs cannot help prevent flooding in any case. We need bigger Jug to prevent flooding of the rivers. That is also called "Dam".

my simple thought, build dams & sub rivers or cannels of divert floods, it is in my city way back 100's of years ago. they built or created by nature is not prb. it saves my city now. River Cavary & Kollidem in sourthern city of India, Trichy. Try or analyseit for further development

Sorry to OP but that does not work, we have all that in the UK but it still floods where i live every year! Plus given the state of the cantonment cleaners they would sweep rubbish into the drains like they did on Rawal road and then these drains would be rendered useless any-ways.

For a country like Pakistan you need dams, hazard mapping, prevention training and defensive structures such as storm gates like the ones on the Thames: Google Image Result for http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/static/images/Leisure/measurementslarge.jpg
