Make in India - A catching phrase ringed around the world for the last couple of years. Reason being the vibe felt in India, Country with 3rd large army and top 5 largest military which needs 150 billions usd worth of defence upgrades. With vast resources and promising economic growth as in fact made it more powerful diplomatically than it was before.

So far the architect of this new Indian Voyage Mr. Modi Prime Minister of India had struck the right chords fairly but with wrong tune.

Because, what makes a product successful is its demand. Its true that demand for the product is directly related to quality and acceptability by others. So how will Indian defence sector will ever grow when it has to compete against well established defense manufacturers!?

The way forward should be to make defence exports a major part of our diplomacy. It is India's time to charm our diplomacy with grand old strategy "Carrots and sticks" which is still relevant today.

As far as my understanding. Today Indian small arms industries already produced AK 47 ripoff and many other variety of hand guns and machine guns. And quite recently we can see large arms industries like bharat forge already have working model for howitzer. Ranging from 105 mm field artillery to 155/52 Heavy artillery.

My doubt is that why Government of India should not take some interest on these companies and use our diplomatic clout to get export orders for them. From countries like Afghanistan, Iraq, Egypt, African, Latin and Asian countries like Vietnamese etc? This will not only improve our defence trade deficit but also shuttle our R&D for more well refined products for our Indian Armed forces and other friendly countries.

For example I belive India should be able to make some 100 mil USD or more military assistance fund to the Afghan armed forces. All these money could be spent on our home grown defence companies. I mean what could be the best way to test weapon systems than fielding it in real war theaters against harsh environments like in Central Asia and Arabian desserts !!!

Chinese always did this. First they make their requirements tabled. Then they fund R&D with a private or public sector. As soon as the product is just below expectation,Just induct it in large numbers. Mean while with confidence their military shown on this particular weapon system they offer it to country which face financial crisis. They make it more attractive by offering with soft loans. Finally they improve these weapons systems capabilities with lots of profits from gained the export deals and full fill their original requirements for this weapon system. Once it's done Name it as Mk2 or next gen etc. Sell it to the same buyer for more bucks as improved variant.

This is the design for all developing countries with large Armed forces relaying on imports like India.

Local partner ship with these countries will help us gain more knowledge and real-time data for improved variants and more advanced weapon systems for users from developed countries. Why should Bharat Forge guns should be ideal without any orders. We have our strategic partners Afghanistan and now Iraq asking for military assistance. It's time we spread our defence expertise untapped and spread across the country. It's a crime we don't do it now. Or we will keep talking about how to make in India in defense even after 20 years.

As we in India know it better than anyone else. We know there are someone poorer than you. And they wish they had something similar to what you have already but not satisfied with it :D

i think its too early for private players to start exporting finished products(other than some types of vehicles) as they are still new to the field.. we should not create bad name for indian products by asking foreign govts to buy our unfinished MK1 products..

Bhart forge already have howitzers but they don't have testing range. . Bold steps have to be made. First step could be to FastTrack these tests and certification process and next could be to make it available for exports. Bad name is not important aspect for country like India as don't export a lot in first place.

why dont they have testing range? they are multi million dollar company..
we need an independent defence product certification agency.. with people from forces and police... in future public and private players will be bidding for product and we need an institution that can be trusted, so that even losers are happy.

Because they have to get approval from GOI for testing. They don't have testing range it's only under govt
