Like Haier they had been around for a while but were overshadowed by higher profile and highly marketed Japanese electronics companies. Samsung built cheaper more small sized stuff.

They made those portable TVs and microwaves (and possibly refrigerators) in college student dorms. I think their big breakout was flat screen computer monitors with good refresh rates.
