Again, Huawei Surpass Qualcomm and Samsung to Top Global 5G Patent Ranking
July 10 2023

In its latest report, the China Academy of Information and Communication Technology has named Huawei as the global leader in the ranking of 5G patents registration, surpassing Qualcomm and Samsung, which are the major competitors.

This is coming a month after the Global 5G Standard-Essential Patents and Standard Proposal Research ranked it first in global 5G patents while releasing the 2023 report.

Huawei continues to lead the patent market in 5G technology despite constant sanctions imposed by the US government due to the US-China war. The firm tops the fifth-generation technology with about 9000 registered patents, according to the data.

China Academy of Information and Communication Technology Report
The agency reported that 14.59% of the market is accounted for by Huawei’s key patents. Followed by the American company Qualcomm, which comes in second with 10.04%, and Samsung sits at the third spot with 8.80% of the patents for key technologies required for the functioning of the new mobile connection technology.

In addition to the top three businesses mentioned, additional businesses that stand out for filing numerous patents that advance the development of the 5G standard include ZTE, LG, Nokia, Ericson, Datang, OPPO, and Xiaomi, respectively.

Meanwhile, the data further demonstrates that Chinese and Western businesses are clearly in competition for the majority of 5G patents. Huawei is one of the corporations most impacted by American controls, which is the result of the trade war between China and the United States.

Without any iota of doubt, China has made progress in both the research and development of the next 6G mobile connection technology as well as 5G in recent years. According to rumors, the Chinese brand will soon start making 5G-capable mobile phones again, which would signal the company’s comeback to the global smartphone market.

SHENZHEN, China : Chinese tech giant Huawei Technologies received $560 million in royalty revenues in 2022, Alan Fan, its head of intellectual property (IP), said on Thursday in a speech at company headquarters in the city of Shenzhen.

Huawei earned more than it paid out in royalties over the last two years as the decline in handset sales meant it needed to pay less to other IP holders, Fan said.

The company has entered into patent licenses with phone makers Samsung and Oppo and automakers including Audi, Mercedes Benz, BMW, Porsche, Subaru, Lamborghini and Bentley, Huawei said.

Last year, Huawei spent $23 billion on research and development, with 114,000 staff, 55 per cent of its total, working on research, the company said.

From 2019, rounds of U.S restrictions after authorities there called the company a security risk reduced its access to chipmaking tools. Huawei denies being a security risk.
