HOW SALIENT IS THE DRDO'S LIGHT TANK

A 105 mm gun on a BMP-II chassis??? :woot: Instead of the APFSDS round heading towards its target, the BMP will head in the opposite direction due to the recoil!! I mean do they intend firing the BMP toward the enemy instead of the 105mm round? :P

The tank was successfully tested several times.

They probably added a lot more weight to the chassis and armor otherwise you can't get a 105mm plugging away from an unmodified BMP!

It obvious wasn't an unmodified BMP,the sarath chasis was used for it. The tank is from 1996.

DRDO's products look like they cam straight out of the 1980's.

The DRDO has to be cut down to size, They have to stop wasting resources on projects nobody has even requested.

They should focus on these:

carbine, rifle, lmg, mmg, hmg, sniper rifle

155/52 artillery towed/ self propelled

NVGs that dont have a 10% failure rate

new light weight mortars

a new air defense gun

etc.

The BMP 2 is a DEATH TRAP. I would never go into combat in one of them. Id rather slog it on my feet.

Of course. They put a turret, gun, armor etc on it. So obviously the weight would have gone up a few.

Agree and disagree. Without experience and trials and errors, how are they ever gonna learn ^^

1.The tank is actually something developed during the 1990s.
2. DRDO(India) has developed its own rifle, carbine, lmg, mmg, hmg, sniper rifle, that are in service for decades.
3. DRDO(india) has developed its own SPGs,some has been in service for a longtime and are nearing retirement.
4.source pls. DRDO NVGs are in service for a long time.
5. Light weight mortars in service.
6. We have our own air defence guns as well as air to air guns.
7.BMP in one of the most widely deployed APC in the world. Our BMP 2 Saraths are well protected.

Please compare it to current generation of APCs in the world and you will see the difference. The problem is, we are still trying to catch up and developing things on our own, that other countries developed years back (APCs, MBTs, light fighters, trainers...), but at the same time we dream about NG developments too, which doesn't work. We must use our advantages to jointly work with other countries at defence developments, that is the only way to learn about the base developments and to get high level arms as well (FGFA, Brahmos, MTA, Barak 8, hopefully Maitri SAM).
If we just keep hoping on our indigenous industry, we will remain behind all major powers for decades!

@ Sancho

Private companies like Tata & Mahindra are developing some nice vehicle concepts, can't these
be used as the chassis for this light tank? They look much better than BMP-2 and are likely to be
developed and enter series production quicker for they'd be made by private companies -

Is it on paper yet or still a wet dream, looking at the delays in every indain project I guess its not even gotten wet yet
I guess its becoming more apparent with every passing day that the mere expectations of the Pakistanis that they could just brush aside every Indian defence development as junk and wet dream bound to be a failure etc. etc. is turning out to be more of a wet dream for themselves!!My dear friend I am 100% sure that their are far too many non-madarsa educated engineers and planners in India than in Pakistan who know very well how to work towards the fructification of a project. So while u continue to remain immersed in YOUR own wet dream's we would continue to be on the growth trajectory and our endeavors would fully mature while u would remain blinded by ur hate and extremism.:cheesy:

True that its time to think about BMP's replacements. And i agree that we should acclerate our developments. But never forget the past achievements of our indigenous defence industries.

Tata, Mahindra, and a few other *cough* *cough* "international" companies are participating in the tender. The FICV (Futuristic Infantry Combat Vehicle) will replace the current BMP-2 Sarath. IA plans to order upto 2500 of them.

That could be the long term aim, as a further development of FICV, but the tender for tracked and wheeled light tanks is separate one and could be a fast procurement.
I would love to see Mahindra using their JV not only for the SEP platform, but to get a hand on the CV90-120 too!
