There is no particular reason. Until 1973 it was call Unit 848.

The only units in IDF who carry a number for a reason are the brigades that were founded in 1947/8, i.e Golani brigade - #1, Carmeli brigade - #2, Alexandroni brigade - #3, e.t.c

And why these names?

And why these names?

The names were territorial, from north to south. Golani for the Golan heights, Carmeli for the Carmel range, Alexandroni for the Alexander river, and so on.

And so went the numbers from 1 to 12.
