It required a masterstroke to kill Abu Qasim, the head of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) in Jammu and Kashmir. Qasim who had masterminded the Udhampur attack was killed recently by the armed forces. How did the Indian army do this?
It was well known fact that Qasim would seek shelter in a base that is not too familiar with him. In a recent encounter, Qasim had got the better of the Jammu and Kashmir police and even gunned down a decorated officer Altaf Dar.
The army had been constantly monitoring Qasim and wanted to strike at him on a turf that he was unfamiliar with. There is a major rift between the Lashkar and the Hizbul Mujahideen in Kashmir today and the army being well aware of this pushed Qasim into a base of the latter.
The army began putting out information about a possible operation against Qasim which led him to moving out of his stronghold. He walked into a base at Khulgam which is a stronghold of the Hizbul Mujahideen.
The Hizbul which wants the Lashkar weakened in Jammu and Kashmir leaked information about Qasim’s specific location.
Qasim during the encounter with the army found that he was lacking the crucial local support that he always relied upon and this helped the army get the better of him.
