HK scientists prove time travel impossible - People's Daily Online July 27, 2011

Hong Kong scientists announced that they had determined the idea of time travel is impossible by proving nothing can travel faster than the speed of light.

The finding is contained in a study done by a research team from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

The study was published Monday in a scientific journal "Physical Review Letters" in the United States.

"The study, which showed that single photons also obey the speed limit c, confirms Einstein's causality, that is, an effect cannot occur before its cause," the university said on its website.

"By showing that single photons cannot travel faster than the speed of light, our results bring a closure to the debate on the true speed of information carried by a single photon." said Professor Du Shengwang, who led the study.

The possibility of time travel was raised 10 years ago when scientists discovered the optical pulses in some specific medium might propagate information in a faster-than-light speed.

"Our findings will also likely have potential applications by giving scientists a better picture on the transmission of quantum information." Du said.

It's true, nothing can go faster than light.

But most time-travel theories nowadays, involve "worm holes", rather than faster-than-light travel.

Also, you don't need to go faster than light to achieve time dilation. Time dilation already occurs when traveling in jet planes, or in areas of high gravity.

I think it is wrong for the journalists to interpret this as evidence that time travel is impossible.

It is possible to travel into the future without surpassing the speed of light. I don't think it's possible to travel into the past though.

^^everything is relative to different points of perception.

I read somewhere scientist said that the voice raised on Earth travel in space and those voices remain there continue traveling...but this universe is so big to catch them up..............may be that is the theory behind to travel in Past..........also this theory is very near to many religion's beleives about life after death..............when all the deeds of human will be presented infront of him what he did in his life...... good or bad and based on this he will be entered either in heaven or hell.

Good observation. Like in politics, even in science no two scientists agree with each other. Especially in theoretical physics. The journalist would've just published what was released by the lab's PR. Besides, they still cannot account for the characteristics of time in a singularity (black hole).

True....

Nowadays you find arguments for and against for any issue in Political, Scientific and religious circles.....
It boils down to the fact who you want to listen to

But it is also believed that in 1/1000000th second after the Big Bang, the material that blasted out/formed different galaxies, traveled faster than light, however its just a belief, research is still on.All the current galaxies were separated/thrown away from each other billions of light years away in that 1 second after the Big Bang, which implies they traveled faster than light.
But as it is,Big Bang has a lot of myths and studies are still on.

Time Travel- Hmm if it was possible we would be seeing a lot of time travelers from the future to stop us from destroying the earth-

Everyone assumes the speed of light has been constant from the beginning. Perhaps it has not. And while time dilation isn't technically "time travel," by every imaginable definition of it, the effect is identical. Nothing in physics prevents a human from traveling in a ship for a year or two and returning to Earth in the year 10,000. Forward only, never back.

The Apollo astronauts aged a few milliseconds less than the rest of us.

I read a theory where time dilation is combined with wormholes, to create a time machine.

I.e. One (out of two) of the wormhole's exit portals, is accelerated around a particle accelerator at high speed. So one of the wormhole's exits is running behind the other one in relative time.

From the book "How to build a time machine" (Paul Davies, 2002).

All completely theoretical of course.
