Hong Kong is free...not in a sovereign sense but Hong Kongers do not have any less "freedom" than say, Canadians or Americans. As for Singapore, it chose to join the Federation of Malaysia in 1963 but was expelled from the union by the Parliament of Malaysia less than 2 years later.

HK need to know among other things that their citizens continue to have a high standard of life after the british left are partly due to some of CCP's policies. They are being subsidised at the cost of poorer mainland Chinese (Yet it is the poorer mainlanders that are looked down upon). HK would be sucked dry if China have allowed the likes of Shenzhen a freehand to compete with HK. One of the newly established multi-lane express way bridge in the region did not even connect with Shenzhen due to concerns for HK.
