WRONG.. A railway line can make it feasible, there exist a plan to link gwadar with Gilit via railway.. And it will go al the way to kasghar from where it can be extended to Russia..I am not sure how useful Gwadar is for Russia despite hearing about the news of warm water one of the key cause for Russia's intervention into Afghanistan.
Russia is too far from Pakistan and there are only few states of Russia which can really benefit from Gwadar. They are welcome to invest in Pakistan and be part of CPEC however the trade route of CPEC is economically not viable for Russia. They would have imported oil from middle east but they already have it in abundance so what exactly are they going to transport from Gwadar... not very much if nothing
Agreed. Which is why Pakistan's relationship until recent time was strictly business. Go find out how many of Pakistan's elite moved to China to live there? Now compare all the Pakistani's in USA. You really think Pakistan could have kept the West if she had joined the Russian camp? Not a chance in hell. You think our sardars, maulanas would have bought houses or sent their kids to Moscow in 1960s or 1950s?
The Chinese embrace was not at the expense of the West. Indeed Pakistan/China/USA got together against Soviet Russia. In short in 1960s you either would go West~China or Soviet Russia. You would not have both of them.
That famous approach by Nixon's America with China and Pakistan in middle was against Russia. How exactly would you have played the Chinese and then kept Soviet Russia?
In short our elite lived/dined/sent their young to the West (many others like me and millions of othes including many members here migrated to the West under this umbrella) but kept a very strict business like dealing with China. Contact was limited to top officials.
Now things are about to change. China/Pak relationship is going mult-idimentional. Gwadar is about to open both countries and we will see how both get on. Somebody is going to have to adjust and I know who that is going to be.

Yes, of course. I look at China and Russia not in respect of Su-35s or miles of motorway built. These are tangibles and superficial. More profound is the culture of change that they will bring. Pakistan has been shaped by America in the preceding 50 years. Most of the time this meant doleouts to keep the elite happy, cultivating the right wing religious mullahdom to offset the threat from the left leaning socialists. Now these reactionery forces have gone out of control and America after having got it's job done has walked away.your dream of accelerating the positive influence from outside is given more facets.
Wasn't thuis the same putin who warned india that china is putting it's influence in indian ocean ?

I am confident Gwadar and CPEC will usher in Chinese influece and the right wing mullahdom is going to get muzzled. Chinese and rampant religiousity are nemesis and cannot subsist together. That is why I watch on the Chinese dawn in Pakistan in amusement. Interesting times. Out of this will come a new Pakistan where people like me can be comfortable with.

A tunnel at wakhan corridor from Tajikistan to Pakistan under afghanistan will keep afghanistan in the dark ages for ever. i support tunneling at the narrowest point of Wakhan corridor as the hostile and pro indian policies of afghanistan are about to descend that country further into chaos which will affect all forms of access. Tunneling can by pass all of this.
