History made, Rajya Sabha passes Women's Bill

March 09, 2010

History was made on Tuesday with the Rajya Sabha passing the historic 108th Constitutional Amendment Bill granting one-third reservation to women in Parliament and state legislatures. The decision was first taken by a voice vote, and the division showed that that 186 votes were in favour and one vote against.
Dogged by disruptions since the bill was introduced in the Upper House on Monday, Chairman of the Rajya Sabha Hamid Ansari called for a vote on the motion on Tuesday at 6.40 pm following the debate.

Prior to that, when the House reconvened at 3 pm, it seemed that the Bill will be passed without a debate, with Ansari summoning marshals to evict seven disruptive members of Parliament and calling for a voice vote. As he then called for a division, Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley , who was to open the debate, protested the decision, and Ansari agreed to the debate.

The Bill is expected to be moved in the Lok Sabha after the Finance Bill is passed, where it is expected to face equally rough weather. United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi , however, said on Tuesday there was no threat to the government.

I personally am not too happy about this.

Only deserving candidates should be allowed in Parliament irrespective of their gender.

No one is stopping females to contest. Its free for all. Its not that the seats were reserved for males. Reserving seats is one step backward, and I don't understand its gonna help.

well on one side it will help women get equal representation in the parliament. We will have to wait and watch to see what the results are.

i am happy with the passing of the bill,

indian society is too strongly patriarchal. its patriarchal to an extent that this bill was necessary.

i thought the problem was passing it through the Lok Sabha where Lalu and Mulayam Singh Yaday were opposing it.
