Unidentified men on Sunday vandalised a historic Hindu temple in Peshawar city of northwest Pakistan that was reopened on the orders of a court last year, police officials and local residents said. The attackers burnt pictures and damaged a shivling inside Gorakhnath Temple and took away idols from the shrine located within an archaeological complex in Gor Gathri area, leaders of the Hindu community said.

The shrine’s custodian told the media that this was the third attack on the temple in the past two months.

Police officers visited the temple to probe the incident.

Hindu leaders urged police to put in place better security measures to prevent such incidents.

The temple's custodian told police that he had seen a group of eight men inside the temple when he arrived there at 6.30 pm.

The men started burning pictures and holy books before fleeing with some idols, he said.

Members of the minority Hindu community rushed to the temple.

Footage on television showed burnt papers and utensils lying strewn on the floor of the temple.

The 160-year-old temple was reopened for Hindus last year on the orders of the Peshawar High Court.

It has been closed since Partition.

The temple was reopened after Phool Wati, the daughter of the shrine's cleric, petitioned the high court.

As a Pakistani, I hope the people who did this will be brought to justice and be prosecuted. This is unacceptable and dis-respectful towards minority groups.

I agree, and does vandalism really have to make international news headlines?

Sure, local news is fine, but news that reaches another country is a bit odd.

I mean, Indian media is quick to jump to these kinds of acts against temples, but if it's anything involving a mosque, they barely report it.

Is this a random event or is the persecution of Hindus commonplace over there? Media reports aside, what is the reality on the ground. Pakistani comments are appreciated. Others don't really matter.

While Pakistan isn't the best for place for minorities at this time to live, it certainly isn't as bad as what some "media" makes it out to be.

Hindus in Pakistan are pretty educated and a lot of them are successful, they may face some difficulties in rural areas but in big cites they have integrated in well and again are successful! Pretty much all minorities tend to be more well off in comparison to their Muslim counterparts in my opinion

I had a couple of Hindu friends back in Pakistan, they never complained about discrimination or anything.

Actually I know of one such guy over here. He's a first generation immigrant from Lahore and he sells real good Pakistani and Indian food at the university. I was quite surprised to see pictures of Ganesha on his wall. Later I got to know that his elder brother is a Pakistani Hindu Punjabi who's actually a big wig in Lahore. I think in real estate probably, with government connections. I'm not sure what his name is, but from what I've heard from some Pakistani people who know him, this guy's like influential even in the Muslim community.

These b$$tards are enemy of Pakistan, Pakistanis and shame for us all, they must be caught and max. punishment must be given to avoid such incidents against any minority/sect.
