Hindi must get official language status at UN, says Rajnath Singh

How does it matter ?

I do not wish to sound cynical but shouldn't we put our heads down & work first ? Work to set right the numerous wrongs within.

.
Hindi is an official language of India. But court rulings and Indian constitution interpretation of Indian courts are in Ebglish. So the ruling language of India is in English, not Hindi.

Since English is the ruling language of UN and India, there is no need to add Hindi in UN.

Tamilnadu gave up secessionism on Nehru's promise that Hindi will not be imposed on Tamils, if India breaks the promise than TN should break away from Hindia by calling for UN sponsored referendum

Shastri backed down and made a broadcast through All India Radio on 11 February. Expressing shock over the riots, he promised to honour Nehru's assurances. He also assured Tamils that English would continue to be used for centre-state and intrastate communications and that the All India Civil Services examination would continue to be conducted in English

Pakistan has a moral obligation to fulfill Jinnah's promise to Tamilnadu

Jinnah openly demanded the creation of yet another independent sovereign state in the South. He interestingly propounded for a third nation - Tamilnadu

In this subcontinent, you have two different societies, the Muslim society and the Hindu society and particularly in this land, there is another nation, that is Dravidastan. This land is really Dravidastan, and imagine its three percent of electioneering, three percent of them should secure a majority. Is this democracy or is this a farce? Therefore, I have the fullest sympathy and give my fullest support to the non-Brahmins, and I say them: “the only was for you to come into your own is to live your own life, according to your culture, according to your language etc., etc.,”7

Except Tamil Nadu everyone understand Hindi if not full then little bit.

This exception is sufficient to free Tamilnadu from Hindian hegemony and Hindi chauvinists . Tamils have nothing in common with rest of Indians

Except Tamil Nadu everyone understand Hindi if not full then little bit.
Hindi & English are official language used in central government.
Orissa state would use Oriya language in state not English or Hindi but in communication with Central Government they use either Hindi or English.

stop bluffing - using Non Hindi speaking states - tax, GOI imposes Hindi on non Hindi speaking states e.g Tamilnadu

Malyalam is state language of Kerala & Tamil Nadu have Tamil.
Hindi & English are official language used in central government.
Orissa state would use Oriya language in state not English or Hindi but in communication with Central Government they use either Hindi or English.

Wikipedia is quoting the census of India. It is not pulling numbers out of nowhere. You can check the links of the sources.

Most Indians you would have met in UAE would probably be from Kerala so it would be natural that they may not know Hindi. But even then if you speak to them in Hindi they may understand

Sign in Hindi, Rajnath tells govt. servants - The Hindu

Updated: September 15, 2015 03:06 IST
President Pranab Mukherjee said on Monday that India was trying to get Hindi the status of an official language of the United Nations.

He was speaking after conferring awards, on the occasion of ‘Hindi Divas,’ on individuals and government organisations for taking special efforts to promote Hindi.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said “Hindi was not getting its due respect” and some “so-called intellectuals continued to promote English.”

Though Tamil was considered the oldest Indian language after Sanskrit, Hindi had the widest reach and was therefore acknowledged as the eldest sister of all Indian languages.

He requested government servants to sign their files in Hindi.

The President said Hindi had achieved a number of milestones since Independence and was credited as being the vehicle of Indian thought and culture.

It was the factor that linked our traditional knowledge, ancient civilisation and modern progress, Mr. Mukherjee said.

“Our efforts should be to increase the use of Hindi in science and technology so that the participation of all, including the rural population, can be ensured in the progress of the country.”

The President said that literature pertaining to technical knowledge should be made available in Hindi and other Indian languages.

Mr. Singh said he had nothing against any language. But Hindi was the language that connected every part of the country. “ Demand to make Hindi our official language came first from non-Hindi speaking leaders like Bal Gangdadhar Tilak,” he said.

Wrong to say 'Hindi' confined to particular region: MoS PMO | Zee News

Last Updated: Wednesday, September 16, 2015 - 21:59

New Delhi: It will be a gross error fraught with long term implications if an impression is allowed to perpetuate that Hindi is confined only to a particular religion or region as a medium of communication, Union Minister Jitendra Singh said here on Wednesday.

The truth, on the other hand, is that Hindi is a part of legacy of every such individual who has inherited the legacy of 'Hindustan' irrespective of religion, caste, sect or region, he said.

Some of the best literature and poetry in Hindi, for instance, was written by Muslim poets and writers even though their mother tongue may not have been Hindi, said Singh Minister of State in Prime Minister's Office.

"It would be a gross error fraught with long term implications if an impression is allowed to perpetuate that Hindi is confined only to a particular section of society or religion or region as a medium of communication," he said.

Delivering keynote address as chief guest to commemorate 'Hindi fortnight celebrations' here, the Minister made an emphatic assertion that the growth of India is linked to the growth of Hindi.

"Just as in the next few years, India grows economically as a world power, its equivalent growth on cultural and civilisational scale would be closely proportionate to the extent of growth of Hindi not only as a language but as an important symbol of India's identity," he explained.

It is a strange paradox that living in India and being Indians, we need to observe a 'Hindi fortnight' or a 'Hindi Divas' to remind ourselves about Hindi and its richness, Singh said.

He said, it sounds strange when one thinks that people living in Britain do not have to observe an English language day to remind themselves of the importance of English language or people living in France do not observe a French language day.

"Therefore, the real question that we should ask ourselves is whether we have failed to cultivate in ourselves the esteem of the heritage of Hindi language and the pride of speaking Hindi," he said.

Singh said, he has come across a number of parents who are themselves scholars in Hindi language but prefer to send their children to English schools and take pride in their children communicating in English rather than in Hindi.

"Promotion of Hindi cannot happen merely through symbolic programmes but may, in essence, require re-look into our education pattern.

"In this regard, some of the measures that can be contemplated may include inculcating advantages of knowing Hindi right at the middle or high school level as well as encouraging the use of common man's spoken Hindi instead of language with heavy phrases," he said.
