Rivers of ice: Vanishing glaciers

Stunning images from high in the Himalayas - showing the extent by which many glaciers have shrunk in the past 80 years or so - have gone on display at the Royal Geographical Society in central London.

Between 2007 and 2010, David Breashears retraced the steps of early photographic pioneers such as Major E O Wheeler, George Mallory and Vittorio Sella - to try to re-take their views of breathtaking glacial vistas.

The mountaineer and photographer is the founder of GlacierWorks - a non-profit organisation that uses art, science and adventure to raise public awareness about the consequences of climate change in the Himalayas.

Hi, thanks for posting this, I was in the process of doing this as I found this a very interesting article. I have read a lot about this. This has very strong implications for India and Pakistan.

Disappearing glaciers, do not mean that the amount of rain/snow has decreased. Rather it implies, that due to global warming, less of the precipitation is freezing and being retained on glaciers. That further effects the waterflow throughout the year, when the snow melts.

We are seeing the results of this in Pakistan for the past two years; the floods. There is more rain falling and more of it at once. This implies Pakistan urgently needs to build dams to store this water, as it appears in concentrated bursts and not over the year as snows on glaciers melt.

Global warming is caused by human activities so we are the real problem. We should change our ways of life.
The militarization by India and Pakistan in Siachin glacier should end

End of time jee, everything in this universe is created to be vanished... Including living creatures etc... It proves trustfulness of Quran and Islam about the day of judgement...All atheists are being proved to be false...

This will be more dangerous for Pakistan than India because the Indus River flows through Pakistan and the Himalayas sits on top of Pakistan, which means more flooding for Pakistan. Maybe only the very north of India will be affected but not most of india which is no where near the Indus and the Himalayas.
