Hiking state-run TV fee to Rs100: Rs23 bn additional burden shifted to people

ISLAMABAD: The government has made arrangements for transferring additional burden of Rs23 billion to the masses as Prime Minister Imran khan has approved a summary jacking up the state-run TV fee from Rs35 to Rs100 per month.

The summary will be sent to the federal cabinet for approval. “This phenomenal increase of 187 percent into the fee charged through the electricity bills has been approved by PM Imran Khan for state-owned TV and now it is proposed to be increased from Rs35 to Rs100 per month basis,” top official sources confirmed to The News on Monday.

According to official documents, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on receipt of PTV Board’s resolution for increase of TV license fee from Rs35 to Rs100 per month shall initiate a summary for the cabinet in terms of Section 10 of Wireless Telegraphy Act 1933 and The Television Receiving Apparatus (Possession and Licensing) Rules 1970.

Upon receiving the resolution, the prime minister approved the summary that would now be tabled before the cabinet in the coming weeks. The state-owned TV has been facing financial difficulties so the state-run TV Board floated this idea and approved that the state-run TV fee should be increased from Rs35 to Rs100 all over the country.

The state-run TV is already getting over Rs5 billion from the pockets of voiceless consumers but now it is estimated that they would get Rs23 billion additional from them. This idea of charging state-run TV fee got implemented during the Musharraf regime because it was an easy way to shift subsidy burden to voiceless consumers.

Do people not understand how a government institution works? They run off money that is generated by the people. Either from taxes or such licensing fee. People are ok paying PKR400 to PKR800 / month for cable, which seems to show indian channels and ant state channels. But paying PKR100/month for Pakistan state channel, that is been running since 1964 is a burden? People in other countries pay almost PKR2,600 / month for state channel in the form of TV licensing.

Please excuse us from this BS,we need to pay so that PTV can live a high life. Not long ago during PMLN time, PTV allocated more than Rs270 million to Chairman Qasmi in the form of compensation and other employee benefits, as well as advertisement funds, over his two-year term.It all came to be known that he was using PTV funds for purchasing erotic drugs and for showering his favourite females.
P.S:-Have you seen their shitty camera setup on 23rd Parade? That alone is enough for purging whole institute.

Any state institution needs money to work properly. Even expand or update infrastructure. PTV has always been afloat by generating low revenue, along with tax money budget allocated by the government, which is just enough to cover the costs. When you are generating profits that are so low, that inflation wipes them out, you can't upgrade much at all. No government has given attention to PTV to upgrade it, until now. You don't wipe out a institute. Look at PIA, it was generating loss after loss for years. The governments would just keep bailing them out. Now, for the first time PIA generated a break even operating revenue. The right people can make all the difference.

from Dam fund to Corona Fund
additional taxes, price hikes, massive difference in Petroleum Prices and all those damn loans from IMF
where TH is all that money going? Peshawar BRT?

How many pakistanis pay direct income tax?

According to the International Development Committee, in 2013 Pakistan had a lower-than-average tax take. Only 0.57% of Pakistanis, or 768,000 people out of a population of 190 million pay income tax

But why should we do anything about that instead subsidies the whole country collect nothing and let nawaz and zadari loose like the dogs should be

As of last year, only 1.6 million people in the country filed tax returns. Out of them, 400,000 showed income below the levels that tax cuts in, another 200,000 had minimal tax, and only 950,000 paid tax of any significance.

Take PIA out of this and it's plain excuse for babus sitting in PTV.RS 270 million for one person is huge in 2 years.

Then why did your abu's government went to IMF if things were so good?
currently we are talking about your Abu
your abu has sent your dada abu to London instead of getting the stolen money back, so you should ask him.

where is all the damn money going? my question stands

I would suggest to allow PTV aire Indian dramas, movies and songs. In between allow advertisements.
This way we wouldn't need a single rupee from our own pocket.
Who would agree?

Wrong again. Nawaz Sharif left IMF in 2016. IK brought IMF back to Pakistan.

The question here should be that if someone does not watch PTV then why should he pay for it.

You think a newspaper that has been caught lying and with their pants down several times will be believed by anyone other than people like you?

First bring an official notification regarding this hike then we will believe it.

IK is not like your Nawaz so don't judge him by the same standards.

PTV is a burden on government of Pakistan and poor of Pakistan. Nobody watches it, nobody.

It's a crappy channel with technology of world war 2 era.

Stop funding PTV and make it a private entity and see how PTV becomes the best TV channel overnight. They're just eating our tax money without spending it on improving the channel because they know no matter how crap the channel is, they will still get money.
