High yielding rice breed unveiled

A new type of high-yielding breed of Aman rice has been unveiled in Bangladesh.
Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury said Bangladesh was the first country to release seeds of the zinc-rich Bri-62.

Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) has invented this breed, she said at Monday’s press briefing.

“It is not genetically modified (GM) type,” Matia said. “This breed has been invented by pollination with local rice breed.”

Each kilogramme of this type of rice will contain 19 milligrams of zinc and nine percent protein which will ensure nutrition values and help prevent diseases, according to the minister.

Zinc plays an important role in preventing intestinal diseases.

BRRI officials said the Bri-62 will yield crops within 105 days – the least time among different varieties of rice produced during the Aman season.

The medium-sized rice will yield 4.2 metric tonnes of crop in each hectare, they said.

The minister said seeds of the new breed will be supplied to the farmers from the forthcoming Aman season in December-January.

Campaigns will be launched to encourage the farmers to adopt the breed, she said.

The farmland area of a small Bangladesh is about 20.5 million acres. There was a time when we depended upon rainfall to cultivate. Only a few days before harvest flood water would come rushing and wash away most of the crops and our hopes. Drought killed much of the crops while still in the fields. All these caused sorrow of the people. Many families were destroyed and became destitute.

During around 1965, when Ayub Khan was the President of Pakistan, the govt initiated many good things that included family planning and moving the cropping season from the Summer to more comfortable winter. Water pumps were made available from that time, fertilizer and pesticides, too.

Green Revolution that started in 1965 is becoming more and more matured year after year. When the population doubled during this period, the crop production tripled. We are quite self sufficient now-a-days. All the govts after 1975 kept on following the footsteps of their predecessors.

71 to 75 was a difficult time for Bangladesh. The govt was sincere, but it had very little means to support increase agriculture output. More than 300,000 hungry Bangladeshis died consequently in the 1974 famine that made AL and Sk. Mujib very unpopular.

Now, the country has come out of its basket case image. I believe, many decades of efforts have made us strong as a nation. So, we can see developments not only in agriculture, but also in textiles and other sectors.
