High-speed rail, Germany to study Chennai-Bangalore-Mysore route

NEW DELHI: Speed seems to be the latest mantra for Railways as it has roped in Germany to undertake feasibility study for running high speed trains on the southern corridor.

"It was decided at a meeting today with the high level German delegation that Germany will conduct feasibility study on Chennai-Bangalore-Mysore section for running high speed train. Germany will also bear the expenditure for the study," said a senior Railway Ministry official.

Besides, Railway officials also discussed with the German team about raising speed on one of the existing line to 200 km per hour, he added.

Led by State Secretary of Germany's Transport and Digital Infrastructure Ministry Michel Odenwald , the German delegation met Railway Board Chairman A K Mittal and senior officials here to discuss various issues involving running high speed train, raising speed on the existing track and redevelopment of stations.

Railways also requested Germany to undertake a study of one station for renovation/redevelopment.

Railways has earmarked 400 stations to be redeveloped as smart stations with added passenger amenities involving private players.

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu had visited Germany to discuss cooperation between the two countries in the rail sector. Besides, Prabhu also had a meeting with German rail industries to offer investment opportunities in the rail sector in India .

The German expertise in the field of high speed rail, increasing speed of existing routes, station development, multi modal logistics terminal and automobile logistics are of interest to India.

cool thats a good route with high traffic, will reduce the burden on bangalore population.:tup:

Indeed...actually this Chennai -Bangalore route has easily much much more traffic than the Ahmedabad -Mumbai route that is being so vigorously talked about ....Both the economic giants of Chennai and Bangalore are 10 million plus cities ...and complement each other beautifully in IT and Manufacturing ..would be a great blessing if they were able to limit costs to 2000-3000 per ticket .....the crowd between the two cities is mostly middle class to upper middle class ..so they will easily be able to afford this..

From the economic and commercial stand point , Germany stands to gain a lot through this route ....as the concentration of German industry is the highest in India ( or 2nd highest after the Mumbai-Pune belt..both regions are really close), with the likes of Bosch , Daimler, DMW , Benz and of course the german R and D /tech companies in this region!!

How many trains u have between Chennai and Bangalore its always full. Chennai-Bangalore-Hyderabad route is always goddamn busy.
Bullet train btw Chennai- Bangalore must be vigorously pursued.

I thought the Japanese were doing feasability study on this route. :what: Or German help is regarding on upgrading existing tracks?

I am eagerly awaiting the results of Talgo train tests.

Yep! This line is always always FULL. Doesn't matter what season or day of the week or time of the day, the trains run.

But I think that is the case for most of the trains running in Karnataka which has really been starved of Railway connectivity. If I am not wrong, until very recently - the entire state had less than 100km of electrified lines or double lines! Even today, that number has not improved by much!

I am eagerly awaiting the results of Talgo train tests.

Talgo trains are good stop-gap measures, but I still think India should pursue dedicated High Speed Corridors on trunk routes especially if they get funding similar to what Japan offered.

With our population, the demand for high speed connectivity (in addition to all other modes of transport) is inevitable. With Land Acquisition going to be ever more tougher, the sooner we plan for it, the less painful it would be.

One of the most annoying things is, Bangalore Mysore is a single line. I got stuck in train the one and only time I went Mysore. About Rest of Karnataka, I am not so sure. Infact large number of towns must be connected through Railway lines. I am really glad, the Railway ministry hasnt announced new projects. Even if we dont announce new projects for next 5 years, the backlog of projects, will still be huge. Its important to release finance for these projects.

The only exception should be for NE regions, where new lines can be announced (again huge backlogs in NE too).

Chennai- Bang line needs an HSR line, no matter Talgo is good or not. The thing is Talgo can increase speed on existing track. And I hope Talgo's if announced are tested in South and Western region first before trying in UP, Bihar, WB states :P IKWIM
