Martyr Lance Naik Hanamanthappa lost his struggle with life after a miraculous survival for six days in an avalanche which resulted in death of nine other armed forces personnel.

Working in harsh environments likeSiachen where temperatures drop to -50 degrees centigrade is never going to be easy. In such areas robotics is the future of surveillance and rescue operations. Hi-Tech Robotics has developed Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear ( CBRN) – an Unmanned Ground Vehicle (CBRN) in collaboration with Defence Research & design Organisation (DRDO).

The Hi-Tech Robotic Systemz has been co-developed by with VRDE, Ahmadnagar (DRDO lab). This robot can be used for saving lives of defense personnel in Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear warfare and variants of this robot can be used for video surveillance, UXO handling & combat / anti-terrorist operations, according to a statement. At high altitudes with harsh environments, the robot can do surveillance and can aid in rescue operations where landing is not possible.

S Radhakrishnan, OS & Director – Industry Interface and Technology Management,DRDO said, “Military technology is becoming complex and Robotics is going to play a big role in defense technology.” Robotics is a multi-disciplinary field and a good understanding of mechanics, automation, electronics, image processing is a must.

Speaking at the sidelines of the event Anuj Kapuria, Director & CEO, The Hi-Tech Robotic Systemz (THRSL) said in a release, “DRDO has provided us an opportunity to develop technology which can strengthen our armed forces.”

My idea was of a inflatable blimp, which can control the air:helium ratio to control its ascend and descend, and can carry surveillance for weeks in IR camera.

Good idea....but troops are present on the ground not for surveillance but for claiming the territory and defending it!!Right?

You do know blimps would be just target practice near the border.

That is what we talking about .Reduce the human activity in the glacier, develop more robots.

LOL at your logic, do you think these tracked robots can carry out anything significant in offensive front to claim the territory? No, these are for surveillance only, and it's reach is limited by the contours of the mountainous region. A blimp can easily overcome that. Hence, to soldiers can only respond to when needed, thus lesser exposure to the harsh environment, and less life hazard.

Not exactly. But yes, it can damage it, but with advanced membranes dividing the structure into numerous pockets of gases, it will take a large number of bullets to bring it down.

Instead of patrolling in these difficult areas, wouldn't using a drone would be the best bet

I don't think decreasing human activity in Siachen is an option, with Pak on the west and China on the east and Siachen being one of India's fresh water reserves.

What the soldiers need are hi tech survival equipment i.e. the latest of the latest, body function monitoring suits, thermal generation suits, Hyperbaric oxygen chambers, better acclimatization processes, powerful RFID devices, more helis for medical support and such.
