A few weeks ago, defamatory and fake images were circulated on social media about the Chief Justice of Pakistan and as a result Ch. Nisar Ahmed, Interior Minister, ordered FIA to nab the culprits to set an example.

FIA made some arrests but it couldn’t get a hold of the originator of the images or the person who initiated the campaign.

Those who were arrested pointed out to social media accounts from where they had copied the images. FIA, as per its SOPs, made a request to Facebook to handover the information of such posters which was declined.

As you would expect, Ch. Nisar was furious over the matter and said that the refusal by American officials and Facebook management was disappointing.

He was further quoted as saying that “international companies cannot be allowed to make controversies out of our important people”.

As per Facebook’s policies, free speech is an important matter and anyone is allowed to say anything as long as it does not fall under hate speech. And this is exactly why it declined to handover the information to Pakistani authorities.

These policies, that have been there for years now, were finally communicated to Ch. Nisar to which he said “We will not allow defamation and false accusations on social media in the name of free speech”.

He also hinted about the launch of local versions of Facebook, Whatsapp, Twitter etc.

This makes one wonder why Ch. Nisar didn’t react like this when Facbeook allowed “Draw Mohammad Day” in the name of speech. Or if put in other words, why was Mr. Nisar expecting anything at all from Facebook when it has “Free Speech” argument to use in such situations?

Was it the fact that it was against a Chief Minister that triggered Ch. Nisar and made him angry? Why doesn’t he have such an extreme reaction when blasphemous content is posted on Facebook and is not removed or posters’ information is not shared in the name of “free speech”?

So this is what Government of Pakistan can do (we proposed the same in year 2010):

Option 1

  • You will have to go with Facebook’s terms, agree with it or don’t use it.
  • You simply can not bind Facebook to comply with your local laws, unless you are so huge that their business is impacted with your decisions
  • If you think your user-base if huge and Facebook is indeed going to face trouble as a result of your decisions, then go ahead and speak with them face to face
  • Get beyond emails and work on diplomacy and lobby with concerned people and make relations with Facebook so it may listen to you
  • Take the matter to American courts, this is where Facebook will be liable to listen to you (MoIT once thought of it but never did it)
  • Speak with US government but since you are indebted to them in so many ways, we understand you can’t discuss anything with US government on equal standing
Option 2

  • Since we brag about immense talent in Pakistani people, why not invest on them and let them make our own Facebook, Twitter or Whatsapp?
  • Let these talented Pakistanis make tools that are so rich that they are not only used in Pakistan but other countries could also adopt them
  • This way you will not only get local laws implemented on social media, but you can actually get billions of dollars flowing into Pakistan
  • This way you also get to retain your information with-in your hands, instead of giving it away to CIA or other American agencies (through these international companies).
But then again, you can not expect anything from people who thrive on corruption and who only think of how to mint money instead of developing the human resource potential of the nation.

Then there is option 3

  • Ban entire social media
  • Earn a lot of bad press
  • then re-open after few weeks, months, or years
  • Repeat option 3 whenever needed

. . .
C'mon people post crazy photoshopped images of prominent people on PDF all the time and nobody is having their accounts sent to the authorities.

2nd option is best

Alhamdulillah we have experience with option 3 we will do it again :D

.
Option 2 is for those country's whose leaders are visionary and patriotic who thinks about their country and it's people first it's not for corrupt to the core thugs blood sucking leaches. Most probably we will go with option 3 like always "baar baar thook ke chaato".

Why not create our own unique secure internet with speed of 5000MB/sec?

Agar hum itne he ache hote inventions main tu rona kiss baat ka tha

Option Zero : Learn to live with it.

Let shamers and haters do their stuff
as they've done since humanity's dawn
and forge your own path ahead for your
own good and reasons.

It works fine on an individual basis too!

Just sayin', Tay.

TBH, you'd be surprised how little education helps with
all but the most obvious fake news. I agree with you on
the need to fight off such influences of course but until
the education system is up to the job, the best tool is ...

a trustworthy national news ( all instantaneous media ) channel.

If you give the people a clear non-propaganda laden message
that keeps the citizen informed and make it accessible to all
( have PA donate communal radios in remote villages if necessary ), those
with cooler heads will reassure the worried or inflamed.

Still, nothing will cure idiocy. A nation that claims to have the
best
education system in the world just elected FakeNewsman
as its Prez so ...

Be a good you, as a person or a nation, and forget about what
others think.

All the best to you and yours Ali, Tay.

.
but in comparison to widespread social net working net we must adopt to censor it at any level.

Awwww, not a fan of censorship really, sorry!
Calm calculated factual concise denial and voilà.

Otherwise agreed, take care, Tay.

Doing Nothing will create un-rest in our society , and this will encourage more people use disgusting language against the Prophet and they know they can get away with it .. and that is when people start taking justice in their hands .. when a country or justice system failed to act than mob justice takes over eventually .. Terrorists will fill this gap attack those blasphemers and gain public support .. Remember Charlie Habdo ??

Why don't you consult China? They seem to be masters at systematic control of internet. You will be able to ban individual facebook profiles or pages with their firewall.
