HDI 2013 (Human Development Index)

If you read the rankings, Bangladesh and Pakistan both are ranked at the same 146, only they have probably put Bangladesh before is that alphabetically it will come before.
Also, India is also 136 not far ahead. So it seems economic revival is just for the rich. The poor are the same there.

No it has not both are at 146, its appearing above Pakistan because of alphabetical arrangement.

You are right. Still great improvement by BD, no disrespect to Pakistan. BD used to be a few steps down till last year.

Anyone got the HDI report for the different states?

Has Pakistan went down or Bd went up in HDI rank...:azn:

10 place difference is not small.......

Till last year HDI gap between India and Pakistan was not much.....but I can see it is widen now....and it will widen further in coming year....so better worry about Pakistan....India has 1.3 billion to worry about...

total crap this HDI!

it's a political tool.

It seems that Sri Lanka is light years ahead of China: rofl:

Hmm, I've heard many Bangledeshis boasting they have a higher HDI than India, IIRC some Indian media outlets have said the same. Has India jumped foreward signifcantly or BD dropped back drasticay in the past year?

Whatever may be case BD is the youngest nation (1971) in SA and has done well.

HDI is misleading a bit, is merely a composite statistic of life expectancy, education, and income. The index ignores many major factors. A good alternative is the Legatum Prosperity Index and Happy Planet Index:

The 2012 Legatum Prosperity Index
Happy Planet Index

It is more detailed and include more parameters, but some of the inputs were objective and abstract, for example:
Health, subindex
Do you have any health problem? (% yes)
Satisfied with personal health? (% yes)
really? it is not well defined what is health problem and how one interpreter it, chronic health problem yeas, how about a head ache? or broken arm?

Satisfied with the beauty of the environment? (% yes)
how is this has to do with health?

Did you feel well-rested yesterday? (% yes)
Did you experience worrying yesterday? (% yes)

Really? how this parameter can be objective? did they conduct this poll at the same time all around the world? did they took in consideration seasons? UK winter Australia summer, how about cultural differences? maybe some of the questioners were asked this question after holiday in particular country and at the same time another country poll has been asked after working week, just examples...

How about Satisfied with freedom of choice? (% yes)

again not only that it is subjective how one perceive freedom, how do you even conceptualize freedom? isnt it abstract?

in terms of HDI growth rate we are higher than India right now.

But in terms of actual HDI BD is behind India is all I am saying. Which is not what I've heard claimed by certain ND members on PDF. Wrt growth in HDI you can't compare a nation of ~160,000,000 and 1.2 BILLION.
