What's new

Has Pak. been sidelined by the Indo-Afgh. Strategic Agreement?

I have to agree.. The agreement is with the Mayor of kabul..
and those that will be trained will be the Ethnic tajiks and uzbeks.. NA people.
A new civil war on the horizon in Afghanistan.. and the return of the Taliban.
History, as usual.. repeats itself in Afghanistan.

When was Pakistan not being 'sidelined'?

Pakistan has been complaining for months that it has been excluded from US & Afghan talks for political reconciliation with the Taliban, and the Afghans have refused to allow Pakistan to train Afghan forces, while India has been training small batches of Afghan security forces already.

So what exactly is a new development here?

Pakistan was not sidelined from 1980-2001... 9/11 changed the Dynamics. Anti taliban/pakistan got control of Afghanistan.

For many years Pakistan enjoyed king-like welcome/service in Afghanistan. Its our chance now.. Its time of Indo-Afghan ties to come up.. Believe me our relation will be of equality...

A transparent framework. Transparency is good for Pak-Af trust building.

It made it official I guess. :undecided:
So basically, in real terms, this 'strategic agreement' tells us nothing new and does nothing in terms of Afghan-India relations, since all the cooperation it mentions is already being done between the two countries, and it 'takes away' nothing from Pakistan since Afghanistan hasn't really come any closer to Pakistan and has neither involved Pakistan in political reconciliation talks nor has it engaged Pakistan's offer for deeper security ties.

Pakistan cannot lose something Afghanistan never chose to offer in the first place.

Please read the thread and posts again - what is being talked about is how anything has changed for Pakistan with this 'strategic agreement' between India and Afghanistan, given that Pakistan was already being 'sidelined' and the cooperation between India and Afghanistan mentioned in the agreement was already taking place.

Other than some media hype and a 'document', this agreement offers nothing new to Pakistan, India or Afghanistan.

lol india keep falling into USA trap, and making deals with the mayor of one city, everyone knows who's in control of afghanistan, the sooner indians and americans ack this , they can pull out of this war, otherwise no way , it will keep going on like this and if they engage Paksitan into this (they are doing it) then it will move into whole region including india

India keeps falling into USA trap??.. who's economy, military, civil society is getting hammered since last 10 years because of its involvement in Afghanistan?? I will give you a hint.. The name doesnt start with an I, but add a nice little curve to the letter I and you are getting somewhere.. :)

Actually there is a very subtle angle to this, if you chose to look at it. Journey from the time, where the powers in Afghanistan decided to not invite India to a conference on Afghanistan so as to pander to Pakistani sensitivities, to Afghanistan having unofficial engagements with Indian political and military agencies to finally officially declaring a strategic alignment, signifies a reducing stature of Pakistan for the NATO/US/Afghanistan establishment.. As they say in the subcontinent, even "aankh ki Sharam" is also no longer a factor ...

Given that Pakistan the one US ally that has worked and bled the most in this war, such a sidelining would speak volumes of the abject failure of its diplomacy. What should have been gained from all the sacrifices has been lost by the inept leadership who failed totally at reading the developments, and being reactive rather than proactive.

Even now, all is not lost, but only if Pakistani leaders chart a new course aimed at regaining their position at the negotiating table. Increasing the nuisance value will not be a good way to achieve that, for sure.

Actually India was being sidelined for the past decade on Pakistan's behest. However, the Haqqani backed assasination of Rabbani. What is new is India and Afghanistan engaging in training of ANSF. This was never done before.

On top of that, the economic development part is also interesting. Coupling this with Indo-Iranian talks speeding up recently, its setting up the stage to help Afghanistan to stand on its own feet economically. A strong stable Afghanistan that can defend itself from foreign interference is in the in the interest of India and the rest of the world and this time around it won't be a repeat of the 1990s.

Hi Santro,

I fail to understand if pakistan stops marginalizing uzbeks, tajiks hazaras and other minorities of afghan, doesn't it reduce the trust deficit among afghan and international community. When I say treating minorities of Afghanistan better doesn't translate into alienating ethinic pashtun majorities. Pakistan has substantial influence on pashtuns which is evident by the support it enjoys among events in Afghanistan. Can pakistan influence the pashtuns in accepting other minorities as equal partners of pakistan's assitance and vice versa. Although I am aware that pakistan has major chunk of pashtun, it has had geographical ties with minorites too. cant pakistan come out of its pashtun favorings and negate any Indian influence

NEW DELHI: Afghan President Hamid Karzai sought Wednesday to reassure Pakistan about his country’s new partnership deal signed with India, which will see New Delhi help train Afghan security forces.

“Pakistan is a twin brother, India is a great friend. The agreement that we signed yesterday with our friend will not affect our brother,” Karzai told an audience in New Delhi.

The strategic partnership sealed with India on Tuesday — the first such pact between Afghanistan and another country — deepens already friendly ties and aims to boost trade, security and cultural links.

But Indian involvement in Afghanistan is extremely sensitive because of the delicate and often deadly power games in South Asia, with Pakistan vehemently opposed to its arch-foe meddling in what it considers its backyard.

“The signing of the strategic partnership with India is not directed against any country. It is not directed against any other entity. This is for Afghanistan to benefit from the strength of India,” Karzai added.

New Delhi, fearful of the return of a religious militant regime in Kabul, has ploughed more than $2 billion of aid into Afghanistan to gain influence, helping fund highways and the new national parliament building.

Karzai stressed that the focus of his efforts in bringing peace to his war-torn country, where international forces are set to withdraw from 2014, would now be on talking to Pakistan.

He added, however, that engagement with Islamabad had “unfortunately not yet received the result that we want”.

Relations between the two nations are severely strained after Karzai accused his neighbour of playing a “double-game” by covertly funding militant groups that carry out attacks in Afghanistan.

The assassination of Kabul’s peace envoy to the militants last month forced Karzai to re-examine his long-running strategy of trying to broker contacts with the Taliban to open peace negotiations.

“We have now decided not to talk to the Taliban because we don’t know their address. When we find them, we will talk to them. Therefore we have decided to talk to our brothers, our neighbours, in Pakistan,” Karzai said.

Analysts in India had predicted that Karzai, angry at Pakistan and wary of a drawdown of US troops by 2014, would look to elevate India’s role in stabilising his war-torn country.

The strategic agreement includes pledges by India to help train and equip Afghan security forces and improve two-way trade, with both countries promising to work for “everlasting peace and friendship between the two governments.”

These artificial 'agreements' are not for so long.

As soon as US/NATO leave that country, the power will again be in the hands of locals and you know whom they would prefer. ;)

That mayor of Kabul can sign as many agreements as he wants but we all know what will happen in the end.

Afghan Pushtuns have issues with Pakistan as well. Both who supported Taliban and those who hated it.

For their own different reasons.

At this point, Pakistan is popular with no faction in Afghanistan.

Yeah and this time, fortunately for Pakistan I guess, India is committing the exact same mistake that the mighty USSR committed. They also forged an alliance with an unpopular Govt. and India is doing the exact same thing. A person who could not protect his own family is considered the President of Afghanistan.....what a joke!

Talibaan will return and the US itself will bring them back, they are desperately looking for positive negotiations with Talibaan (Mulla Umar faction).

Who would they prefer?

Or is it who will be imposed on them? Someone you would prefer Afghans to endure but not Pakistanis? ;)
