New Delhi: The country's largest car maker Maruti Suzuki India today reported 17.01 per cent jump in its sales for December 2010 at 99,225 units.

Sales for the same month previous year were at 84,804 units, Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) said in a statement.

The National Capital-based company's figures for the domestic market stood at 89,469 units in last month, a 26.01 per cent increase from 71,000 units in December 2009, it added.

MSI's exports in December 2010, however, fell by 29.32 per cent to 9,756 units from 13,804 units in the year-ago period, the company added.

The sales of the company's once bread-and-butter model M800 also declined by 30.15 per cent to 1,798 units from 2,574 units in December 2009, the statement said.

The A2 segment (comprising Alto , WagonR , Estilo , Swift , A-Star and Ritz) witnessed 23.46 per cent growth at 64,492 units compared to 52,236 units in the same month a year ago.

A3 segment sales (consisting of SX4 and DZiRE) increased by 19.37 per cent to 9,362 units from 7,843 units in the corresponding period a year ago, the company said.

MSI's total passenger car sales rose by 20.75 per cent to 75,652 in December as against 62,653 units in the same month in 2009, it added.

In the nine months of this fiscal, the company's total sales stood at 9,27,665 units compared to 7,30,943 units, up by 26.91 per cent.

HONDA to ramp up motorcycle production and triple sales in INDIA to 5 million units annually.

REUTERS - Honda Motor Co. plans to ramp up motorcycle production and triple sales in India to 5 million units annually in five years as its partnership with the Hero Group nears end, the Nikkei business daily reported on Tuesday.

Honda decided last December to sell its stake in joint venture Hero Honda Motors Ltd to Hero Group, the paper said.

To offset the expected decline in its local market share, Honda plans to boost production at subsidiary Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Pvt. from the current 1.55 million units a year, the business daily reported.

The unit's second factory is to begin operating in the state of Rajasthan in the second half of 2011 and lift Honda's production capacity in India to 2.2 million units by around 2012. Plans are also afoot to build a third plant in the state of Andhra Pradesh, the Nikkei said.

Honda's overall investment to increase production in India is estimated at 10 billion rupees, or roughly 18 billion yen, the newspaper said.

Honda plans to begin production on a 250cc sports model in India in March. Honda also plans to open new sales locations in regional cities and rural districts, the paper added.

New Delhi: State-owned Air India Monday reported a cash profit of Rs.21.66 crore for November 2010, owing to significant improvement in efficiency and better management strategies.

The operating surplus was a record of sorts in recent times given that the carrier has been ailing with accumulated losses touching nearly Rs.14,000 crore over the last four financial years and struggling with a debt of Rs.18,000 crore.

Air India said that November's performance was 'largely due to significant improvement in efficiency parameters, coupled by better yield management strategies and a mushrooming number of passengers showing faith in the national carrier'.

Of the 194 flights on the Air India network during November 2010, 108 made cash profits.

'The peak season for air travel would continue and our employees' commitment to meet the challenge is evident' said Arvind Jadhav, chairman and managing director, Air India.

In the period April-November 2010, Air India recorded a network revenue of Rs.7,250 crore, compared to a revenue of Rs.5,911 crore during the corresponding period the previous year, a growth of 22.6 percent.

The airline registered an overall passenger load factor of 66.3 percent during April-November 2010, up from 63.1 percent achieved in the year-ago period.

The government last month cleared fresh equity infusion of Rs.1,200 crore but asked the airline to rationalise its wage bill, an issue which has been the bone of contention between the company's management and unions.
