Today we bid farewell to the past year and usher in the new, but it's not easy to erase the vestige of the record snow disaster caused by La Nina.

La Nina has ramped in North America,south-central part of China,North and South Europe, and Central Asia. In Hunan,south-central province of China, climate was generally mild with only light snows ornamenting winter days unfrequently, but strong snow storms has turn it into a terrible frozen world since the early begining of 2008. electricity was extensively interrupted and airports, highways, railways all out of order. disaster affected people surpassed 70 million in 14 provinces and over 1.8 million travlers were blocked on their way home, connecting their waiting folks in unbounded anxiousness.11 wiremen gave their lives to resume the power.

The whole country was fighting with the disaster, special rescue teams, military troops and policemen were sent to every accident scene, volunteers collected and delivered all kinds of donations over to stuck passengers at railway stations when it was still raining and cold.

by now, some 600,000 railway passengers has finally set out homeward from Guangzhou, while the rest several thousands decided to stay for a Spring Festival away from hometown.

highway resumed

We are not stricken down by the unprecedented disaster, but indeed it has sounded the loudest alarm for environment protection.

"The sun also rises". the disaster will pass as we wave farewell to the past year, we still believe in a golden year of 2008 and always expect a brighter and flourishing future for China.

Let the never-interrupted Chinese civilization and traditional belief bless all.

Happy New Year!
Best wishes to everyone.

Happy Chinese New Year to all!

Some interesting knowledge (see Wiki):

The lunisolar Chinese calendar determines Chinese New Year dates. The calendar is also used in countries that have adopted or have been influenced by Han culture.

Koreans, Mongolians, Nepalese, Bhutanese, Vietnamese celebrate this moment, too.

Japanese celebrated this day before 1873.

In Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and other countries with significant Chinese populations, Chinese New Year is also celebrated, largely by overseas Chinese, but it is not part of the traditional culture of these countries. In Canada, although Chinese New Year is not an official holiday, many ethnic Chinese hold large celebrations and Canada Post issues New Year's themed stamps in domestic and international rates.

In US, we have big parade in New York City, San Francisco, and some other cities.

This year is a year of R.a.t.

Happy New Year :china:. I heard the 2008 was the year of "***". What does that mean. Can anyone explain.:china::pakistan::china::pakistan:

My pleasure, mate

In the traditional Chinese culture there're 12 animals standing as mascot (animal sign) for 12 years in a cycle, such as: (in sequence)

Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig, R.a.t, Ox, Tiger, Hare, Dragon, Horse, Goat and Snake.

1980 was the year of monkey, and consequently same as 1992,2004...
1981 was the year of Rooster, and same as 1993,2005...
1984 was the year of R.a.t, then same as 1996,2008...

Among all above animals, Dragon is the only one out of imagination. but being a totem which had base social systems in the long history of Chinese feudal empires, dragon was even taken into reality by ordinary populace, and morelike the most powerful one.

different with Islam, the Chinese tradinational moral has no problem with pig or boar,it actually endows every animal with nice and peaceful emblems, even including R.a.t and Snake.

R.a.t is one of the dirty and baneful creatures to receive aversion and expulsion in no time, while Snake means cold-blooded character and deathful raid to most people. but when talking about animal signs especially during the Spring Festival, R.a.t stands for dexterity and wisdom,as lovely as Mouse Mickey, and Snake is called junior dragon.

Animal signs are also used to represent your birth year. i.e. if you were born in 1980, monkey is your animal sign of birth. no matter dragon or R.a.t, an animal sign doesn't make any difference between you and other people, except for certain character analysis.

That's what I know about the animal signs in Chinese culture, may it be helpful.

Happy new year!

See how Chinese in Taiwan play fireworks in the New Year. ......Haha, it's like entering a war zone!
