One of the many interesting facts about Tata. Jamshedji Tata decided to make the first Iron & Steel Company of the subcontinent,Tata Steel.
The British greeted their effort with skepticism and derision. Sir Frederick Upcott, Chief Commissioner of the Indian Railways, remarked to Charles Perin, “Do you mean to say that the Tatas propose to make steel rails to British specifications? Why, I will undertake to eat every pound of steel they succeed in making?” Yet, during World War I, it was the Tatas who supplied steel rails to Mesopotamia, which played an important part in the allied victories.

Now fast forward to 2006,Tata steel takes over the largest steel manufacturer of UK,Corus.Fast forward to 2011,Tata Steel is World's 7th largest manufacturer of steel and India's 2nd largest, with a foothold among the Fortune global 500.

I guess Sir Frederick Upcott never imagined this in his wildest dreams.

You are right. The sanctions imposed upon India are to blame as well. While India was virtually writhing under sanctions and trade related bans almost everywhere across the World, the Japanese industries in general and automobile sector in particular received massive boost.they were welcome everywhere.
another significant boost came in form of the 1970s fuel crisis that had affected mainly W.Germany,US,Canada.The US made cars were notoriously fuel hungry, while the Japanese cars made by Honda were fuel efficient, although less powerful, but exactly what a typical middle-class American family needed.the stricter emission control rules in US also aided since the Japanese cars had lower emission. The Japanese cars started selling like hot cakes and gained market monopoly.

Eventhough I agree with many of your points, I don't agree on the sanction part. India was no sanctions during the 1950s,60s & 70s until we exploded our n-Bomb. We got crappy cars during our socialistic era bcs the Govt of the time decided that Indians deserved only crappy cars and that too after years of waiting after booking. I heard one has to wait 8 years to even get a Bajaj scooter (?)

Actually I was relating the sanction part with the International fuel crisis of the 1970s.It was then when the Japanese manufacturers grew by leaps and bounds.

But your point is valid indeed.
Back in the 1950s and 1960s,the media was virtually non-existent,and whatever was there, was state owned, partially blind to the darker parts of the society, more of a propaganda machinery.
Hence, our great leaders of those times had no whistle blowers, resulting in rampant corruption and slow economic growth.
As you have mentioned earlier the socialist outlook is to blame as well.

This reminds me of one of the many stories my father used to tell me,he works for a bank.He was a Junior officer at that time, probably in the 70s.The bank employees were given instructions by the Employee Union to protest against the installation of computers in some bank as the computer may take away someone's job.they eventually did protest!!It seems funny now, isnt it??

BTW.. my father is still in touch with one of the leaders of the Employee Union who was a vehement opposer of use of computers. His son is a Computer Engineer now.
