AHMEDABAD: "Hang me if I am guilty (Main gunehgaar hoon toh mujhe phaansi par latkaa do)." This is what chief minister Narendra Modi has said in his first ever interview to a leading Urdu weekly.

The cover-page interview was conducted by Shahid Siddiqui, a former Rajya Sabha MP from odd quarters - the Samajwadi Party. It runs into six pages and covers post-Godhra riots, the state of Muslims in Gujarat and other sensitive issues.

In a sign of changing perception on Modi, Siddiqui writes candidly that his decision to interview Modi came after a lunch meeting in Mumbai with two Bollywood biggies filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, who is one of Modi's most vocal critics, and celebrated script writer Salim Khan.

"We were discussing Gujarat at a common friend's place when both Salim saab and Bhatt saab suggested that a dialogue is a must to resolve any issue. I never thought Modi would agree to an interview that focused on post-Godhra riots," Siddiqui, editor of Nai Duniya, told TOI.

It is significant that Modi chose to talk about post-Godhra violence to an Urdu weekly after having walked out of television talkshows when prodded on the riots.

The interview has also led to talks about a possible softening of stance of SP leader Mulayam Singh Yadav towards Modi. But, Siddiqui quickly rebuts the theory. "This has nothing to do with SP or Netaji. I am a journalist first then a member of a political party," said Siddiqui, who has had stints with the Congress and the Bahujan Samaj Party in the past.

When contacted, Bhatt confirmed he had adiscussion with Siddiqui at the residence of Gujarati businessman Zafar Sareshwala. "Shahid did his job as a journalist. It will be unfortunate if the write up is used as a PR exercise ," said Bhatt.

Thats what all politicans say when theyre accused of something so janta can realize "wow what a great person he is"!
Naaah he is definately not one of the above mentioned politicion .
He is a man who first does stuff then talks
Have a look at the gujrat model . Its grown under him and shows great promises in the future .

He just said in other manner that if he`s guilty let`s court decide it...

Afwahon per dhyan mat dijiye....

A nice way to escape though . Seems Modi is trying to attract minority vote bank too ... :what:

Azam Khan sacked as Meerut minister-in-charge by Akhilesh and Shahid Siddiqui doing an interview with Modi....hmmm..;)

Whenever Gujrat is mentioned the only things that come to my mind are the riots, massacre and violence. He maybe (I say maybe) responsible for the development of Gujrat, but it is not enough a reason for me to vote for this guy.

Pro-Modi people just think about the state of the minorities if this guy is at the helm (I can say cause being a minority, it is really scary to see such a thing happening).

That's because the media was on a one point agenda in repeating the same thing again and again and again to drive in a fear psychosis. Look at the media coverage on the Assam riots..where is the sense of outrage ? where are the front page screaming headlines ? where are the 24*7 live tickers ?

There is much more to Gujarat than riots..yeah that's true. Rather than going by what the english media has to say on Modi go on what Gujrathis say.

Come out of the fear psychosis.

It is not communalism or secularism that is the gravest threat to India today..it is corruption. It is the policy paralysis. It is the apathy towards the aam-admi at the highest levels of Govt.

What you said may be true about most politicians , Modi is an exception to that rule , that's why most forward looking Indians want India to be under Modi's Rule !!!
