Current Status: Preliminary Design Review Complete, Critical Design Review Going On, to be completed by the end of 2024 or early 2025

Project is fully supported by the Indian Navy and Funding for PDR was provided by them, where as Ministry of Defence is funding the CDR.

Project is not yet fully funded like Tejas Mk2 or AMCA because it is yet to complete it CDR and thus hasn't been presented before the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) for funding.
CCS funding is to be approved no early than 2025, and first prototype is to fly no early than 2028

Prototype is under construction, (can be proved by the various tenders for sub-system procurement released by HAL) and first flight will happen by the end of 2024.
And If HAL and IAF officials are to be believed unlike the mk1a the testing period for mk2 will be much shorter and will end in just 3-4 years
The plan is to start the production of Tejas mk2 as soon as orders of mk1a are completed (which will happen in 2028)

Oh boy - that is ONE dirty - disorganised messy assembly hall for the fighter .... shocking.

Not suprised Dassault did not want to be responsbile for the warranty of Rafales assembed in India after seeing this picture!

And Egypt is seriously thinking of getting this fighter ??

And shockingly not a single crash or accident despite all that huh?

Please, I've been on the assembly floor of Boeing hundreds of times and trust me, it can get dirty as well. More organized perhaps but the sanitized, clean as heck PR pics that emerge for wowing audiences are just that- PR images.

BTW, there are 3 assembly lines for the Tejas including new one being set up at HAL Nasik. The ones that exist at HAL Bangalore were organically grown having been assembly lines for other jets that HAL manufactured including Jaguars and Hawks.

Hopefully sometime by the mid of 2024. By then the first Tejas Mk2 should be on the assembly floor and not just parts being manufactured at the suppliers' plants.

There have been plenty of lessons learnt from the Tejas development and flight testing. One of the biggest gains will be in flight testing where they now know which test points they absolutely must test and which ones can be avoided. Will reduce flight testing effort greatly.

There will also be no IOC or FOC for the Tejas Mk2. As soon as the flight testing allows for the opening of the full flight envelope and basic weapons testing is done, it will be inducted into service.

Decks cleared for the production of GE F-414-INS6 engines jointly by GE and HAL in India for the Tejas Mk2 and 2 squadrons of AMCA.

In a very significant move, the United States government has given all necessary permissions to India for the joint manufacturing of General Electric (GE) F-414 jet engines for Tejas Mk2 and Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) Mk-1 fighter jets.

India has earlier selected GE F-414 engines for powering Tejas Mk2 and the first two squadrons of AMCA Mk-1 fighter jets.

In a statement to ANI, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) chairman Dr. Samir V. Kamat said that India will jointly co-manufacture these engines with GE for Tejas Mk2 and the first two squadrons of AMCA, as all the clearances have been received from the US.

Just five months ago, in June 2023, when Prime Minister Modi visited the US, India signed a deal to co-produce GE F-414 engines in India.
