HAL-Russian Helicopters Working on Improving KA-226T “Technical Concept”

Indian and Russian experts are currently working on improving the technical concept of the KA-226T helicopters, which could mean customizing the choppers to Indian requirements.


Sergei Goreslavsky, Deputy Director General of Rosoboronexport said in an interview to Interfax-AVN earlier this week that parallel to this activity, documentation for the creation of a joint venture in India and the setting up of an assembly plant was in “full swing.”

At the first stage, a few dozen assembled Ka-226T’s are to be delivered to India in a fly-away condition followed by manufacturing the helicopters in Indian under the Make in India program.

He added that the Russian side was ok with the Indian position that helicopters manufactured in India should also be exported. “Conceptually, we are positive about this, but all these things need to be agreed on so that this venture would be mutually rewarding.”

India wants the KA-226T to replace the Cheetah and Cheetak helicopters in service with the Indian armed forces. The Russian machines are expected to perform a variety of missions including transport, casualty evacuation, search-and-rescue and light attack.

As part of localisation, the Indian side would want Indian electronic components to be fitted onto the choppers.
Meanwhile, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has not yet finalized a location for housing the KA-226T helicopter facility. Local media reports said, “Discussions are on to manufacture the Ka-226T in Nashik, Maharashtra, though Bengaluru happens to be the main ground for manufacturing helicopters.

As with many defence deals with Russia, this deal is going round and round in circles with almost no foreward movement. With every passing day this deal becomes less and less viable, it started out as a deal to placate the Russians (the GoI/MoD actually went for G-G deal in lieu of the winning contender from Airbus Military) but they seem so unfathomably unable to operate in the Indian market now that they have bungled this deal beyond beleif.

I won't be surprised when the MoD offically states the chances for the Ka-226T2 are dead and that now all 600 LUH/RSH will be the HAL LUH instead of the 200-200-200 split.

Not at all. There is an outstanding requirement for 600 LUH/RSH for the IA and IAF. Many years ago (around 2007/8) the MoD decided that with the HAL LUH's development yet to begin (at that time) they would go for a 197 unit order of foreign RSH/LUH and also placed an intial order for 187 HAL LUH, these two helos once inducted would then compete for a repeat order (of another 200 or so units) to get to that 600 unit figure. Now the foreign RSH went round and round getting cancelled and re-tendered multiple times (this was the UPA MoD under "the Saint" afterall) but never actually was signed. When the NDA entered govt in 2014 they scrapped the foreign RSH bid all together and instead entered into a G-G deal with Russia for the L2 (NOT the L1 which was the Airbus Military's FENNEC) contender the Ka-226T2 and since then that deal has failed to materialise and the HAL LUH is getting ready for its first flight. It is making less and less sense to go for the Ka-226 but the GoI/MoD seems to be playing geopoltical games with this deal.
