Ecuador had purchased seven Dhruvs from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited between 2009 and 2012.

The Ecuadorian Air Force has moved to sell the three remaining Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Dhruv utility helicopters out of the seven it purchased between 2009 and 2012. This could be a loss of face to HAL, a state-owned aerospace and defence firm based in Bangalore.

Ecuador's Defence Minister Ricardo Patino announced the decision on October 20, IHS Jane's Defence Weekly reported.

Of the seven Dhruv helicopters, four were lost in crashes and the Ecuadorian government had taken a decision to ground the remaining choppers in October 2015. It has also unilaterally ended its contract with HAL. The helicopters are stored at Guayaquil Air Base.

Previous reports had noted that two choppers that crashed were due to pilot errors and one of them was even assigned to the country's presidential entourage.

Ecuadorian Defence Minister had been previously quoted by AP as saying that two Dhruv helicopters crashed due to mechanical problems. He also said that getting the spare parts from India was difficult. However, HAL had insisted that it provided all the spare parts on time and was not provided with any investigative reports that said mechanical failure was the reason behind crashes.

Dhruv helicopters are built in India and have been extensively used by Indian armed forces in varied environment in India with over 200 in service. The helicopter can fly and operate in high-altitude areas. It uses two Shakti engines which can reach a maximum speed of 290 km/h.

Ecuador had selected Dhruv after a hard competition from Elbit, Eurocopter and Kazan. It cost Ecuador $50.7mn, 32 percent lower than the second lowest bid.

Till date, these machines have operated exceptionally well and more countries have shown interest in purchasing them.

Case of crashes in Ecuador, needs to be investigated, could well be a case of Piloting errors.
may be because .. IAF do not have the luxury to reject the malfunctional choppers ...

Who they will sell to ? We need to provide a better service to the other customer and prove the Ecuadorian b!tches wrong.:enjoy:

I think MK3 version has sorted out the vibration issues and now a days we don't hear anything about the issues/crashes in Dhruv, so the products has come a long way and HAL has improved it too.

Well these guys were using the ALH to fly their president, clearly they were more than satisfied with the Dhruv's flight safety. if they are unable to operate any time (be it American, European or Indian) a/c without crashing them that exposes issues with their training and support infrastructure. I see many falsely using the FAE's expereince with the ALH to diminish the ALH's record but the facts speak for themselves. >220 ALHs are in service with another 30-40 being produced a year for the Indian Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and others, the ALH has spawned off numerous sucessful derivatives:

Has operated in the heights of Siachin, the Deserts of Thar and everywhere in between and has proven itself as amongst the finest flying machines ever created and is constantly being refined (Mk.1, Mk.2, Mk.3, Mk.4 and beyond), not to mention it is the type flown by the Indian Air Force's display team (Sarang). I can understand the compulsion of some to diminsh this project but their motives are entirely transparent.
