This year it falls on October 1-6, with the date varying according to moon sightings.

One of the most trending pilgrim selfies was posted on April 30, replicating the most re-tweeted Oscar selfie posted by television celebrity Ellen DeGeneres.

The tweet said: “Can the #HajjSelfie beat the #OscarSelfie in Retweets? Let's RT this to infinity #Muslim and say #mashAllah

Millions of Muslims traveling to Mecca have caught “selfie fever,” angering some Muslim clerics for snapping pictures of themselves at holy sites during the annual Hajj pilgrimage.

Many young Muslims believe that posting selfies on social media is the best way to communicate with their families and document precious moments.

“I’m taking a selfie with Kaaba behind me to post on my Facebook so my family and friends can see me. That’s the way we communicate these days – no need to call,” Reuters quoted Turkish student Mehmet Dawoud as saying.

Many clerics have looked down on the selfie phenomena, at times even banning cameras from the premises.

“The Prophet...when he went for Hajj, he said: 'O Allah, I ask of you a pilgrimage that contains no boasting or showing off.' Taking such selfies and videos defy the wish of our Prophet,” Huffington Post quoted Jeddah-based scholar Sheikh Assim Al-Hakeem as saying.

I can understand why the clerics are upset, and I agree with them to a certain extent.

Saudi Arabian clerics issue fatwas at the drop of a hat. So why no fatwa banning all smart phones issued as yet??

I can understand as well, as they don't know how to use cellphones, let-alone any other form of technology! :D

They wouldn't mind if their pet-camel knew how to take a selfie for them and upload it as well............ :cheesy:

After you perform full rituals with honesty, you can take pics and selfies of yours against the backdrop of religious places. I don't see harm there. But it should be avoided when you are doing faith based rituals. Thank you.

Don't be stupid son. They are upset because people are using Haj to strengthen their EGOS. I don't have a problem with picture taking, but what is the point of performing Haj when it is just a bragging and showing off contest via social media?

Use your brain.

Religion and especially worship to me is a very personal thing. I would never take a selfie with the Kabaa and be like yea I did that...

Stupid.

Nothing wrong with taking selfies on Hajj, however the sanctity and privacy of this event must be respected. This is Hajj not picnic after all.

Dude, personally I'm extremely allergic to selfies or pictures of ANY sort.......... having said that, I'm against any sort of fatwas on personal choices that aren't expressly prohibited in Islam..........

Well, as long as its not riyaa i.e. not show-off its OK..
If any element of riyaa is present then the person is doomed not only in this world but in life hereafter:

ar-riya is the minor shirk. The word riya is taken from the word ruyah (to be seen). So the one to be seen is viewed by the people as one seeking self-esteem amongst them. So at times one would seek self-esteem by one's actions in this world.

Indeed riyaa is so difficult and dangerous that it can fall into your good actions. The Prophet Muhammed <Sallallahu alaihi wasallam> said, “The one who prays and wants people to see them has committed shirk. The one who fasted and they want the people to know about their fasting has committed shirk. The one who gave sadaqah (charity) and wants people to know about their charity has committed shirk.”

In b/w you go to Hajj just for your self, pray from ALLAH for your forgiveness rather than wasting time in selfie, pics etc!
