The Eurofighter is one of the most modern combat aircraft in the world but still has a bad reputation in Austria. Because of bribes of around 100 million euros allegedly paid, the Typhoon are not only subject to a parliamentary investigating committee, but they also fell into disgrace with Defense Minister Hans Peter Doskozil.

According to the Ministry of Defense, this is mainly due to their high operating costs, estimated to be around 80 million euros per year. According to Kurier’s information, it looks as if the 15 Eurofighters, which cost 1.6 billion euros, could be retired from Austrian skies after only ten years.

Months ago, Doskozil set up a 30-man expert committee to look for alternative combat aircraft. The result, which is being strictly kept under wraps by the military, is to be announced next Friday.

It is clear that a 16 aircraft were needed to monitor Austrian airspace. It was simply excluded that another EU country could be able to secure Austrian airspace. As a neutral country, Austria could not enter into such a dependency.

Although the military is being very tight-lipped, signals have been leaked suggesting that a change to the Saab Gripen is recommended by the Commission. A “déjà-vu” for Austria, as in the search for a successor to the Saab Draken in 2003, the Gripen lost to the Eurofighter.

The Gripen (Saab JAS 39), is available as single- and two-seaters and always appears in rankings of the world's best multi-purpose fighter aircraft. Used C / D version aircraft could be available. However, Saab recently introduced the new "Super Gripen" E / F version, which is more capable than its predecessor and more expensive.

But the Eurofighter is not the only problem. The second aircraft type operated by the Austrian air force, the slow Saab 105 jet trainer, can only be used until 2020. For the time being, they are being used interchangeably with the Eurofighter for reasons of cost.

If the Saab 105s are to be replaced, military expert Georg Mader - the Austrian correspondent for the Jane's Defense – can see several options. The M-346 (or the successor M-345) of the Italian armaments company Leonardo, which has already flown, is one possibility, and the Czech Republic’s Aero L-159, a light ground combat aircraft is another, as is the British BAE Hawk Advanced Jet Trainer. The frequently used F-16 from the USA, on the other hand, is only hard to get.

There remains the exciting question: what will happen to the unloved Eurofighters? A resale is considered legally difficult, but conceivable, by defense experts. Or there could be a buyer for the machines.

Austrian government split over scrapping Eurofighter jets -report
VIENNA, Dec 7 (Reuters) - Austria’s coalition government is split over whether to keep its fleet of Eurofighter jets, with the far-right Freedom Party preferring to replace the planes with Saab aircraft, the newspaper Die Presse reported on Friday.

Defence Minister Mario Kunasek of the Freedom Party has ordered a review of the previous government’s decision to scrap the jets made by the Eurofighter consortium, which includes Airbus, BAE Systems and Italy’s Leonardo .

Chancellor Sebastian Kurz’s conservatives prefer to keep the aircraft, even though Austria is locked in a legal battle with Airbus and the consortium. It accuses them of fraud and wilful deception in connection with a $2 billion Eurofighter order in 2003. They deny the Austrian allegations.

Neutral Austria currently operates decades-old Saab aircraft alongside its Eurofighter jets. The government has yet to decide whether to continue using two families of jets or switch to one, Die Presse reported, without identifying or describing its sources.

Spokesmen for the government and the Defence Ministry were not immediately available for comment.

A decision is unlikely to be reached this year, as originally expected given the disagreements between the two coalition parties, the newspaper said.

The two preferred options - keeping the Eurofighter and buying Saab Gripen jets for roughly 2 billion euros ($2.3 billion) - would cost about the same, Die Presse reported. Any acquisitions would be from another country’s armed forces, it added.

Keeping the Eurofighter would still require various upgrades to the existing jets, and it’s likely they would be fitted with extra weapons systems. A second type of aircraft would also probably be purchased to operate alongside them, with Leonardo’s M-345 currently the preferred option, Die Presse said.

Eurofighter or Gripen? Government postpones decision

Whether the army in the future continues to fly with Eurofighter jets, but only after the U-committee and the ongoing criminal proceedings, says Chancellor Kurz. ÖVP and FPÖ disagree on the question of the next model.

The decision on the Eurofighter is postponed: The government does not want to decide now, as announced, by the end of the year, how active airspace surveillance should look in the future. Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) would like to wait for the U-committee and ongoing criminal proceedings.

Clarity is needed for a decision, such as whether or not a partner with whom you are currently working is guilty of anything, explained Kurz shortly after the Council of Ministers on Wednesday. The Republic has indeed reported the Eurofighter manufacturer Airbus for fraud.

"Airspace surveillance still ensured"

The judiciary has been investigating the cause for years. In addition, a U-committee is currently running in Parliament on the controversial interceptors - it is already the third, and so far he has brought little new information. Until June, unpleasant things could come up there in connection with the purchase.

"If there is clarity, there is the opportunity to make further decisions," said the Chancellor. "Currently, the airspace surveillance is still ensured," promised Kurz.

FPÖ wants to buy Swedish Gripen jets

The Austrian airspace is currently monitored by 15 Eurofighters Typhoon of Tranche 1 and twelve Saab 105. The subsonic airplanes of Saab are 2020 at the end of their lives and must be replaced. The Austrian Tranche 1 Eurofighter, in turn, was procured without complete basic equipment - if it is to continue operating, it needs to be upgraded.

In addition to the retrofitting of existing Eurofighter is currently reportedly the purchase of Swedish Gripen in conversation. Above all, the FPÖ should prefer the Gripen variant, they say. As "Die Presse" reported, ÖVP politicians want to stay with the Eurofighter.

The air traffic control commission of the Federal Army calculated four variants, according to a report from the media. In all of these proposals, ten training aircraft would be ordered to replace the outdated Saab 205 OE. see two variants retrofitting of Euro Fighter steps to make the operation more than 2,021 also possible (at a total cost including training jets from 2.3 to 2.4 billion euros by 2029). see two other versions in addition to the new training jets to exit the Euro Fighter and switching to other fighter jets before: the switch to 18 Saab Gripen would cost accordingly by 2029 2.7 billion euros, 18 F16 jets three billion euros.

The Tranche 1 Eurofighters have really limited capabilities.
Everyone wants to get rid of them, and noone is buying.

They are incompatible with the Tranche 2 and Tranche 3, so no air to ground, no Meteor support,
no upgrade of any functionality, unless the development is fully paid by Austria.
All development for Tranche 2/3 are not applicable for Tranche 1.

The cost to upgrade the 15 Eurofighters would be 2,3-2,4 Billion Euro or 181M$ per aircraft.
Since they feel screwed by the Eurofighter consortium, they migh want to spend that money elsewhere.

I'd buy the unwanted Eurofighters for ,75 euros. haha.

Someone should want those eurofighters, many air forces around the world are still in 60/70s production year, not 2000 or 2010. These fighters are as new as many of the F-22s.

congrats to the Swedes.

Wait until 2020 to sell, when supposedly Iran can buy military products and sell them to the Iranians who are in desperate need of a modern air superiority fighter jet.

The issue with Austria is that they got the EFT with an agreement that they will buy more which would reduce the costs but in reality the did not procure more due to issue of kickback scam. They should opt for Saab but also retain these as they will give them an edge specially now when NATO wants member states to increase defence spending an enhance their capabilities.

Austria is not a member of NATO ;-)

Spare parts and maintenance is really, REALLY expensive.
Austria expects to pay an additional $3-400M per aircraft after they upgraded them for $180M per aircraft.

Why should Iran go for Gripen? JF-17 is far more capable and has the latest DSI.

I am suggesting the Iranians buy the 15 eurofighters. Take apart one and figure how to produce and maintain them.

The Iranians have been servicing the f-14s without any help from the amerikans for 40+ years

The JF-17s would be great for Iranian air superiority and particularly for their anti-ship role.

Austria expects to pay an additional 5-6B$ after the
Pakistan should equip a maritime attack Squadron by buying up these old Eurofighters.

A maritime attack squadron using a fighter that only has air 2 air capability?
What would be the role?

There are Italian and Spanish Tranche 1 for sale since several years and as I said, noone is buying. There is a good reason for that.
