Why would a plane going from Greece to Bangladesh go through Serbia which is West of Greece?

According to news reports their next stopover was Jordan. So they were on the appropriate air lane I suppose.

So BD was buying these from Serbia but Ukranians were contracted for the transport?

Yes. Ukrainian airlines are popular for delivery of such cargo. No other commercial cargo Airlines will do it for you. Ukrainians are appropriately equipped for this, as most of them operates Soviet era military air lifters.
