Grand Operation launched against "wheat" hoarders in response to soaring flour prices

There was carry over stock from last year.

There is no shortage of wheat in warehouses. It's just not being supplied. A few factors contributed to it. Transporters strike, Punjab KPK inter-provincial trade checks, and then of course there is the free market at play.

Everyone likes to make a quick buck. Why would anyone sell it in the local market if they could export it?
I’ve heard the same coming from some. But then it begs the question, why would the government then need to import 300kt if there is no shortage and why have we been hearing about reduced supply and lower production for many months now?

Perhaps now it was wrong to export the 500,000 tons of wheat the government insisted it must do earlier this year, despite advice saying that it should take caution? It’s more than the amount we’re now having to import back. This talk about hoarding is largely scapegoating, when the real issue is of a shortage.

People have been warning of lower wheat production and shortage for months. Government has only just waken up now.

We produced 25.5 million tons last year, which is about >1 million more than required. This year production was lower than expected, but maybe we could cope had we not have exported. I think governments instead of just looking for a quick boost to forex reserves should keep in mind that some
margin is necessary in case of drought, flooding or other mishaps. In a country that produces more than its requirement of wheat, for many people to still be starving in parts of Thar every year is a tragedy, while we export what little we can spare and then it causes a shortage, that’s just tragic.

I don't know if it's the same in the rest of Pakistan, but lots of land in AJK, Northern Punjab is sat around not being cultivated. The owners are now abroad or have family abroading sending money home - they don't bother with it.

There is an economic opportunity here for smart people. My cousins in laws live in Punjab and they built homes, bought cars - all from leasing peoples empty land, farming it and selling the produce.

It’s not just this, drip irrigation is really underused in Pakistan. It is an ideal solution for a country in our situation, it preserves water while actually boosting cultivation capability and yield. If there’s one technology that needs investment in Pakistan, it’s this one.

Our old forms of farming and complacent governments have missed lots of opportunities. We waste a lot of precious water using older flood irrigation methods, all while our per hectare yield is something close to half of China’s. There is a lot that can be done, but it needs smart minds to focus and raise awareness, and it needs funding.

If we can’t afford a giant multi-billion USD dams and can only afford a small fraction. One efficient use might be to set up infrastructure to provide cheap drip irrigation and pumping systems solutions to farmers.

So anything taken into possession or the drama was for as usual nothing?

How is there lower production if the yearly targets have been almost met? Granted, carryover stock is also included in that.

From what I understand, the import is now being done to cater for the extended outflow from already present reserves for the future. At the moment, there is no shortage. But a reduced level form previous year. This reduced level is cause for the concern you see in media, but it does not equate to a shortage.

Khusro Bakhtiar yesterday was saying that Lahore has a demand for 180,000 bags of 20kg per day. Govt provides 140,000 from that, while mills provide 35,000. Now you tell me, if the government is still supplying 3/4th of the supply, how can there be a shortage in the market?

Wow, as an agriculture country we are importing wheat

We even import cotton FFS. Granted, our local cotton is not of the highest quality.

Sab log bas ganna laga kar choos rahay hain

It is absolutely wrong to say that Pakistan as a whole is an agricultural country with any "significant" output of staple crops, only the plains of Punjab around the rivers of Punjab are the true "agricultural lands" with significant agricultural output especially wheat and rice in Pakistan, the rest of Pakistan has insignificant agricultural output that cannot feed more than a fraction of 200 million of people living in this country.

Logistic stocks being declared as hoarding by daku PTI to cove their own ineptness.
May be some daku from PTI shall explain us, what's the limit a whole sale trader can keep in his stock legally?

If we can feed 220 millions and can export additional stock that means we are agriculture
