A “grand operation” has been ordered by Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan against wheat hoarders and profiteers to relieve a shortage of flour supplies.
Prices of flour and bread shot up last week as the grain disappeared from shops and wholesale markets. The cost of wheat flour has surged from PKR43 ($0.27) per kilogram to PKR75 ($0.48) per kilo in different parts of the country.

“As per the prime minister’s instructions, we have been working closely with provincial administrations to resolve the crisis as quickly as possible,” Javed Humayun, senior joint-secretary at the Ministry of National Food Security and Research, told Arab News.

He said the federal government had also started releasing additional wheat stocks to provinces to meet demand. “Provincial governments have also been directed to launch a crackdown against hoarders and profiteers to overcome this artificial crisis,” said the official.

A committee has been set up to take measures to control the commodity’s price. Islamabad also approved the import of 300,000 tons of wheat on Monday, with the first shipment expected to arrive by February 15.

Eventually, the Federal Government must seek a way to Sue Provincial Government in Sindh for their none ability to resolve citizen issue

The issue should be raised with Supreme Court , on behalf of Federal Government

When the federal government feels that the Provincial Government cannot run public service Emergency must be issued

a) Issue Emergency in Province, Sindh Assembly has suspended
b) Supreme court agrees that Sindh Assembly has failed and cases are open against Ministers
c) Rangers are deployed to watch Hoarding is not done

This is the way !!!

Perhaps now it was wrong to export the 500,000 tons of wheat the government insisted it must do earlier this year, despite advice saying that it should take caution? It’s more than the amount we’re now having to import back. This talk about hoarding is largely scapegoating, when the real issue is of a shortage.

People have been warning of lower wheat production and shortage for months. Government has only just waken up now.

We produced 25.5 million tons last year, which is about >1 million more than required. This year production was lower than expected, but maybe we could cope had we not have exported. I think governments instead of just looking for a quick boost to forex reserves should keep in mind that some
margin is necessary in case of drought, flooding or other mishaps. In a country that produces more than its requirement of wheat, for many people to still be starving in parts of Thar every year is a tragedy, while we export what little we can spare and then it causes a shortage, that’s just tragic.

Actual heading of this news article is "Pakistan cracks down on wheat hoarders in response to soaring flour prices". The article itself also doesnt mention PPP. So how exactly have you titled this thread as you have?

There is not shortage in-country

SINDH Government is failing to Govern with Excellence

a) Can't fix Karachi's garbage
b) Wheat is rotting in their storage (new news today they have 80 lakh ton wheat rotting in Sindh)
c) They can't pick up Wheat from Punjab using Trucks or using Trains
d) They can't run Ehsas Program (Previously Benazir Fund , Funded by Pakistani Government)
e) They can't finished the construction of the road in Sindh
f) There are gas shortages they can't fix

Where are the 400,000 tons of wheat the Sindh government seems to have "lost"..... please educate yourself first.

Is locust attack the cause?

Nope they still are asleep!

Lagging in research in every field has left us with seeds imported from USA for American conditions = soil and climate! Not until we resolve this we will continue using seeds that are not useful for us and hence always ending up in a loss!

Traders are hoarder it so they can drive the prices up. There's no shortage of wheat. The deman just can't increase over night and consume all the supplies

There was carry over stock from last year.

There is no shortage of wheat in warehouses. It's just not being supplied. A few factors contributed to it. Transporters strike, Punjab KPK inter-provincial trade checks, and then of course there is the free market at play.

Everyone likes to make a quick buck. Why would anyone sell it in the local market if they could export it?

. .
Why not gov bringing its stock to market?
They should have stock of wheat for cases like this to ensure supply of basic food for public.price rise failure of the government.same happen with medicines.when medicines price increase they started issuing statements like this without any action.
Same happened with gas every year they keep supply short so furness oil mafia can profit the situation.
When they will think about people's sufferings?

Is locust attack the cause?
It will effect next year...

We also sow wheat and selling it to Govt and this year even lower prices....the biggest hoarder is Govt itself they mismanaged 100 of tons wheat every year...further give away free 40000 tons for wheat to Afghandoooz for free.

If there's no shortage of wheat, why is the Government allowing import of wheat on emergency basis?

300,000 metric ton is a lot.
