ISLAMABAD: Analyst Maqbul Elahi Malik said that incumbent government has taken enormous steps to improve Railways as it is backbone of the economy.

He said that Minister for Railways had turned Railways into a profitable department by overcoming corruption, Radio Pakistan reported.

He said that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif personally was monitoring performance of Minister for Railways who had introduced innovative measures in Railways.

He said that cargo service by trains would be a profitable venture because Pakistan Railways would cater cargo requirements of China, Afghanistan and Central Asian Republics.

He said that revival of metro train services would be an important step of the government because it would reduce traffic burden from our roads as metro trains run within major cities and inter cities had cast positive impacts on environment and were attractions for tourists in developed countries.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has given approval for restructuring of Pakistan Railway’s Board.

According to an official source, new board will comprise nine members, headed by Chairman. Other members will include four senior Railway officials and four retired Grade 20 or 21 officials with legal, financial, marketing and human resource expertise. All four members from Railway will preferably be technical experts.

The new board will enjoy powers to take important development and financial decisions, including procurement, PSDP proposals and agreements.

It is pertinent to note that the existing board of Pakistan Railway is dysfunctional since 2002.

Pakistan Railway has witnessed significant improvement in its systems during last year, which also include better traveling facilities to passengers, rehabilitation of tracks, induction of new locomotives and initiation of mega projects.

It would be true had they announced a package of 400 Million Dollars for purchase of 200 LOCOMOTIVE from USA

or 300 locomotives from China with maintenence clause

20 Locomotives is hardly worth mention

Pakistan Railways & PIA are national assets which have been destroyed by politicians for their own personal interests. These two alone can get heavy income for Pakistan but PPP destroyed it & now PML-N is doing it in their own way.

ope they cant, unless of course you can find human angels, tahst dont exist.
the best case cenrio will be it running for a few years in profits then going back to lossess.
PIA has already made over 300 billion losses in this decade(enough to build a university in every Pakistani district), the same amount was lost in steel mills and railway.
unless people understand that govt organizations can only be profitable in a kingdom or powerful dictatorship not in democracy we are going to suffer.

Keeping in view the real potential of Pakistan (revenue generation and development and population), all major cities and capital of all states should have had rail metros up and running supporting the railways network which should have been upgraded with time.

But forget all that, we could not even maintain what the British gave us (railways) which they planned and built keeping in view the population growth for decades to come that is the reason why it is still crawling now at least.

Forget that as well, even the trams we once had are no longer there.

Get a JV with some western loco mfg company and a homegrown heavy industry and start making those locos. Stop relying on getting inferior chinese stuff your own railway folks detest.

There is nothing wrong with Chinese engines its well documented , Pakistan Railway employees , used "refurbished oil" instead of clean new oil supply for maintaining Chinese locomotives due to lack of funds.

Even Boeing 747 would half if sludge was used instead of oil in its engines
