Govt to recruit 12,412 people in BGB

Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS)

DHAKA, Oct 5, 2012 (BSS) - The government has decided to make a fresh recruitment of 12,412 people in the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) over the next five years to help the paramilitary force intensify its vigilance along the country's frontier.

The secretary committee approved a proposal at a meeting on August 23 held at the secretariat with Cabinet Secretary Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan in the chair, ministry of home affairs sources said.

Earlier, the ministry of public administration and the finance ministry cleared the recruitment proposal.

According to the ministry of home affairs, due to shortage of manpower, the BGB has been failing to enforce strict vigilance along the border, especially the 539-km area of the Sundarbans and hill tracts. It also could not set up adequate number of watch towers alone the border due to shortage of manpower.

Senior secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs CQK Mustaq Ahmed sent a proposal to the secretary committee for the fresh recruitment in BGB on July 26.

Out of 44,229 posts, 5,943, which have been identified as unwarranted, will be abolished as part of organizational
restructuring of the BGB.

In the first phase, recruitment will be made against 6,316
posts for four regions, four sectors, four regional intelligent
bureaus and three border guard battalions (Bianibazar, Ruma and
Babuchhara) during the current fiscal year.

In the second phase, 1,514 people will be recruited for
Nilphamari and Alikadam battalion during the fiscal year 2014-15.

As per the plan, 1,524 people will be recruited each for
Bagaihat and Kulaura border guard battalion during the fiscal
year 2013-14, Jhenidah and Naogaon battalion during the fiscal
year 2015-16 and for Sarail Reserve Border Guard and Pilkhana

In 1978, an organogram with a total of 22,930 posts was
approved for the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) which was officially
renamed as Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on January 23, 2011.

Around 8,000 new posts were created in 1982, increasing the
number of total posts for the then BDR to 30,176. The authorities
created 724 more posts in phases.

Talking to BSS, additional secretary of the Ministry of Home
Affairs Kamol Kanti Baidya said as part of the reorganization of
the BGB, four new battalions with new names will be created
abolishing the existing border guard battalions 13, 24, 36 and
44.

Home affairs ministry sources said, 96 new posts include
four additional director generals (status equivalent to brigadier
general), five deputy director generals (status equivalent to
colonel), 29 directors (equivalent to Lt. Col.), 118 additional
directors (equivalent to major) and 104 deputy directors
(equivalent to captain).

What a waste of money! they should cut the BGB force by half since they are good for nothing anyways.

After India decided to increase the number of its BSF troops by about 30,000 troops (?) about two yrs back, Bngladesh also decided to increase its BGB troop number. It is a timely action. It is impossible for BD to contest Indian BSF with number and bring parity, but it is esssential that we increase the number a bit so as to keep the balance with the BSF number along our border.

It may be. But, also it may not be. In case of police recruit there are bribes, but army recruitment policy is different. As far as I know, BGB troops are recruited and then trained by the military. Generally speaking, BA is not corrupt, and the executive branch has very little control over its recruitment or training.

So, BA may not recruit people recommended by MOKHA Alamgir the Home Minister type of people. Only the very dedicated with high physical strength are hired for the job. Many of otherwise weak people recommended by a minister will themselves run away from the camp after only a week long of rigorous training by an Army Habilder.

@ eastwatch, why you always talk foul ! Who told you that BGB persons/soldiers are being trained by the military ! BGB is very old security forces in this sub-continent. It all started from the Ramgargh Local Battalion which was started by East India Company in this Eastern Frontier of British Indian Sub-continent. BGB has its own training centre at Banderban, people call it "Baitul Izzat". Where every six months new recruits are trained by the BGB/Rifles people. Only thing is their 80% officers goes from Army.

@ Now, in India most of the senior officers comes from Police and to a lessor extend from Army and all the other officers are being recruited directly by the BSF itself. During the Pakistan times in order to utilize the border forces to the fullest extend during war it was well decided to bring officers directly from military.

@ Since India is a big country and its defense forces are also big in size so in order to negate this big forces Pakistan Govt decided to bring officers from Army on Secondment. Definitely it had been observed that in the past the fighting capability of East Pakistan Rifles and later on Bangladesh Rifles had greatly increased. I remember during the Pakistan times operation "Asalon" in Chittagong Hill Tract was a great success for EPR. Again in Bangladesh Rifles also played a vital role in decision making. Operation "Boraibari" is a glaring example where eye witness says near about 400 BSF soldiers were killed.

@ Donnot bulshit !!!!!!!!!

I would second on the whole that BA is not corrupt. Politicians have very little say. The top echelons are courted by the politicians however in order to control.... BNPs last appointment did not go so well....

You do not know jack, i have met 2 such cases and they have all said the same thing. Todbir and bribery works everywhere in Bangladesh including Bangladesh army. Even our defense purchases are full of kickbacks to the generals.

BSF is not an offensive force that has the authority (or capability) to enter foreign territorry if thats what you were hinting at. It is mostly to stop illegal border-crossing/migration as well as smuggling along the border.
