“Pakistan is fastest urbanizing country in South Asia, so considering the rapidly growing population and corresponding challenges of urbanization the center is being established to ensure excellence in urban policy formulation,” he said while addressing the award distribution of Institute of Architects Pakistan (IAP).

The minister said the government was actively pursuing Karachi Circular Railway project while the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system of Lahore proved successful project that facilitated citizens of Lahore to travel in less time and helped increase good public transport system.

The BRT system for the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi will start by end of this year while another such project would be launched in Karachi. The federal minister termed the youth as Pakistan’s future adding 63% of country’s population was youth so there is need that opportunities are created for them to work for the development of the country.

The federal minister was of the view that Pakistan was having rich heritage which needed to be preserved and developed for identity of cities.

Ahsan Iqbal directed the concerned authorities of his ministry to launch a “National Architecture Design Competition”, to provide the students of Architecture and Design a platform where they can deliver their creativity and innovations on a live project. He said the key to a better future clearly lies in educating stakeholders and investing in future generations.

The government understands that architecture is an inclusive process for successful development of contemporary cities so we need to establish synergies between a diverse range of professionals and policy makers.
