Govt to drill 8-km hole near Jaitapur nuclear plant

Jaitapur: In a novel idea, the Ministry of Earth Sciences has decided to drill an 8-km drill hole a few hundred km from Jaitapur to try and forecast earthquakes.

The drilling will be carried out at Koyna, which is close to Jaitapur. It will take 2.5 years to complete the project and it will cost Rs. 300 crore.

There have been widespread protests against the proposed nuclear power plant at Jaitapur. Security concerns have been heightened especially after the Fukushima nuclear plant disaster in Japan following tsunami.

it will take 2.5 years to drill 8KM hole???????

its not a 6 inch hole ...all that earth has to be moved to some place too. but yes the Chinese would have done it in 1 year. I don't know why there is such a big gap in competence when it comes to construction by them vs world - although we have to caution about the quality and durability of such efforts as being untested- one of the claims being made by the people who suffered during the last big earthquake.
