Notification held in abeyance; coalition leaders hold several rounds of talks
By Asim Yasin
ISLAMABAD: The notification for the restoration of eight deposed SHC judges was held in abeyance by the federal government late on Wednesday night after hectic talks between the coalition leaders, sources told The News.

The Pakistan People’s Party also agreed to finalise the plan for the president's impeachment. Sources said the breakthrough was achieved at the Punjab House where Asif Ali Zardari, Mian Nawaz Sharif and Maulana Fazlur Rehman held the final session.

The outcome of the two-day talks would be announced today (Thursday) during a joint press conference by PPP and PML-N leaders at the Zardari House. After the meeting at the Prime Minister House, in a brief talk with newsmen, PML-N Information Secretary Ahsan Iqbal said the nation would hear good news on Thursday.

Earlier, the coalition leaders meeting, considering the impeachment of President Musharraf, was marred by the approval of a summary by the president to restore eight deposed judges of the Sindh High Court on Wednesday.

The deliberations among PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari, PML-N Quaid Mian Nawaz Sharif and JUI-I chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman started in the afternoon and its last round concluded at about 2 am.

In an effort to break the impasse, Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani also joined the negotiations. Zardari and Nawaz along with their teams comprising Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif, Senator Ishaq Dar, Ahsan Iqbal, Khawaja Asif, Mian Raza Rabbani, Information Minister Sherry Rehman, Law Minister Farooq H Naek, Minister for Labour and Manpower Syed Khursheed Shah and Minister for Kashmir Affairs Qamaruz Zaman Kaira reached the Punjab House late Wednesday night to continue the talks.

Sources said during this session, the PML-N made efforts to convince Zardari to withdraw the notification for the restoration of the eight deposed SHC judges. Later the heads of ruling coalition Asif Ali Zardari and Mian Shahbaz Sharif moved to the Prime Minister House to resume the talks.

Earlier, the negotiations between PPP and PML-N leaders came to a standstill after reports surfaced regarding the release of a notification for the re-appointment of the deposed judges. The PML-N team walked out of the talks and according to sources Nawaz said he would not return unless the notification was withdrawn. Nawaz was of the view that the notification was meant only for the acceptance of the PCO judges and the PML-N would not support it.

However, sources said Zardari contacted Nawaz on phone and persuaded him to hold negotiations on this issue. Zardari, the sources said, told Nawaz that the government had already faced embarrassment after it withdrew the notification on the ISI. "Therefore, the notification for re-employment of judges will not be cancelled," sources quoted Zardari as saying.

Meanwhile, Senator Ishaq Dar and Ahsan Iqbal remained at Zardari House to finalise the draft for the president's impeachment with the PPP team comprising Mian Raza Rabbani and Information Minister Sherry Rehman.

According to sources, the PML-N stuck to its stand and wanted the notification regarding the judges' re-employment withdrawn. Maulana Fazlur Rehman who attended the afternoon session also joined the evening round.

Meanwhile, another coalition partner the Awami National Party was conspicuous by its absence. Before departing for the Punjab House from the Zardari House, in a brief talk with newsmen Information Minister Sherry Rehman said talks between PPP Co-chairman Senator Asif Ali Zardari and PML-N chief Mian Nawaz Sharif are going in the right direction. "Coalition leaders including Asif Ali Zardari, Nawaz Sharif and Maulana Fazlur Rehman are inside the house," she added.
