Govt plans to construct a 2nd Padma Bridge

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader told Parliament Sunday the present government had a plan to construct a second Padma Bridge.

"The government has already sought financial support from development partners for constructing the proposed bridge over the Padma River," he said in reply to a starred question.

The govt. is just contemplating another bridge ahead of time and working on its concept only. It will take many years to start the real work by which time the present Padma bridge will be constructed. The new work requires survey for the site selection, design and then construction.

It takes a few billion dollars to build such a Dhaka-Khulna expressway. Thing is it is not necessary for that region as the volume of traffic there is very small. Only the heavy traffic in the Dhaka-Ctg. route mandates a TOLL expressway.

On the contrary, the huge potential of south -west bengal can't be tapped due to lack of proper infrastructure.
It is true the Dhaka chittagang corridor was/is /will be the life line of BD economy. But we cannot be middle income country if we fail to develop as a whole / nation.
If we take a look at the impact of Jomuna multipurpose brigde, the whole north bengal emerged as a sunshine, the 'monga' simply wiped out /vanished!!!
