High-rise buildings are allowed

The cabinet allowed four major cities of the country — Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar and Multan — to have 50-storey buildings.

“The cabinet allowed 500-foot-high buildings even in the funnel areas (15km radius) of airports in the four cities,” Minister for Aviation Ghulam Sarwar Khan told Dawn after the cabinet meeting.

He said that earlier there was a ban on construction of high-rises in 15km radius of the airports, but now it had been relaxed.

However, it was observed that despite the ban multi-storey buildings were being constructed in the funnel areas of airports.

The restriction had already been lifted in Islamabad.

At a post-cabinet meeting press conference, Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan said the prime minister had directed the authorities concerned to expedite the process of acquiring the assistance of foreign companies to run the country’s airports in a better way under the government’s policies and provide better facilities to the passengers, besides generating more revenue.

The cabinet was briefed on the progress in work on upgrade and reconstruction of Skardu airport. The meeting empowered minister for aviation to renew licences of airlines companies and expressed the hope that the decision would facilitate the companies and expedite the process of renewals.

High rise are the way to go.
But needs to be done properly.
I think the west side of the Ravi river should be added to Lahore and all the high-rises should be built there. The Ravi river should be beautified like the in Paris and London and have iconic bridges over it.

No historic buildings in old lahore should be torn down, including older neighborhoods like model town.

• the higher the building the further back from main road.

The problem is the reason we see high rises is often not to do with space, but to do with profitability. The sky above the land you buy is free, the land beside it isn't. We need to strike a balance where people still build high rises, but the people who live in them don't live like prisoners.

Well Lahore, Karachi are relatively very safe cities for earth quakes, and nowadays earthquake resistant buildings are very common. Building large high-rise stories will massively help grow the economy of Pakistan.

High-rise buildings signify progress, it creates an atmosphere of advanced development.
It has massive unseen psychological benefits, besides the economic ones.

Wherever you see pictures or videos to show advancement in anything, they usually show anything with highrise buidings. It is about time we started this process.

IK talked about cities growing horizontally but they still allow housing societies
to build 1 kanal or even 2 kanal houses.

In a city they should only allow 5 or 10 marla houses, nothing bigger than 10 marla.
If someone wants a house bigger than 10 marla then he should build 1 in the village.

Laws need to be tightened. Was looking to buy an apartment in Islamabad a few years ago but backed out after discovering that there was no right/share in the land. There was no legal protection either incase of building collapse.

Would you rather they create small single family houses and spread out wide, developing over farmland, and requiring the government to spend on more services further out.

Urbanization, if done correctly, with the right kind of regulations and laws, can create decent places to live and a cost savings multiplier effect for the economy and the tenants.
