Nahid for quality tertiary education

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid Saturday said the country needs quality tertiary education to produce efficient and knowledgeable manpower for building a developed country, reports BSS.
"We are trying to improve quality of education at all levels by imparting adequate knowledge on Information Technology (IT) to build an economically developed Bangladesh," he told a three-day international conference on 'Tertiary Education: Realities and Challenges' in the city.
Daffodil International University (DIU) organised the conference.
Professor Emeritus of DIU Prof Aminul Islam and Sir Jhon Daniel of the UK and DIU Chairman Md Sabur Khan, among others, addressed the conference with DIU Vice Chancellor Prof M Lutfar Rahman in the chair.
In the past, no government could reach a consensus on an education policy, he said, adding the present government has formulated an education policy by including opinions from all levels of the people to bring a qualitative change in the education sector.
"We have taken a challenge to implement the education policy for ensuring quality education in the country," he added.
The existing education system cannot achieve the desired development of the country, the minister said adding technology-based modern education should be expanded to build a poverty-free and prosperous Bangladesh.
"Our education should be life-oriented and productive to expedite development process in the country . . . the government has formulated new curriculum at primary and secondary levels to make our education modern and creative," he added.
Other speakers said at present, there are 82 universities in Bangladesh of which 31 are public and 51 private.
